Pictured with the US Army soldier is our cousin N. He supported US forces in Afghanistan in 2010-2011 and, though he was able to get to the US, he has continued humanitarian work in Afghanistan since then as a member of USAID. 

The speed with which the Taliban took over shocked us all. It shocked N as well and his family was stuck in Afghanistan. Because of N’s work and the family’s strong pro-US and pro-government stance, they have been actively hunted by the Taliban. The Taliban first threatened the children, then shot at their house and soon after found and executed three family members in the first week after seizing the country. We have not heard from a fourth family member in well over a week and fear the worst. The surviving family members were hiding and in a constant state of fear.

We were desperate to get them out of there. Due to their location, it was not easy or cheap and we financed their escape from our own pockets.

They successfully escaped to a third country. But we need help raising money to pay their living expenses and arrange transportation out of the country, and onward to our house in the US where they will stay as long as it takes for them to get on their feet. We don’t know how long this process will take and we are hoping for anything to help us take care of unexpected costs, fees, and whatever they may need as they undertake this journey to safety.

So far, we have been paying expenses out of our own pockets but without help, the family will eventually have to choose between staying in safety or eating. If they cannot get help, they may have to take their chances and return to Afghanistan.
