Hemachandran's Recovery from a Major Brain Stroke

Donation protected
The day has started just like all of ours for Hemachandran and his family on
Apr 11 2020. But it didn’t end well for them. It was a very normal beginning of a weekend. But, it took a wild turn when Hemachandran collapsed suddenly and his family had no idea what was happening. With the help of some neighbors they called 911 and he was rushed to UPMC Mercy hospital ER. The doctors gave some confidence before analyzing his situation. But after looking at Hemachandran’s condition, they sounded given up.

They diagnosed him with a major Brain Stroke and they gave him an injection to dissolve the clot. But, his response to the treatment was not very satisfactory. So they decided to airlift him and take him to UPMC Presbyterian. When his friends and family reached there, they said his condition has grown to be critical and said that anything could happen and asked them to believe in just prayers. They did an MRI scan and found a clot in his brain which was blocking the blood to flow to its left side. Hemachandran’s body took a little time to respond to the treatment given to him. But in the mean time, the clot in his brain has reached 100%. The clot was found in the left side of his brain so, his entire right side of the body got paralyzed. They removed the clot using a catheter and after that his left brain started getting 60% of the blood flow and performed one more MRI to ensure that he is out of danger. But he still has 40% of blockage which needs to be tested periodically to track his improvement.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, they had him tested for Covid-19 as well but fortunately that came out as negative. He has been taken to the Intensive Care Unit for continuous treatment. The hospital had some revised policies about visitors because of the Covid-19 pandemic. So, his wife was not allowed to be with him during this hard period. She got to see him just for 15 minutes and that too via facetime. As we can all understand it’s a very difficult time for his wife, more than she had to see her husband struggle through this situation, she couldn’t be there along with him during this time because of the situation. The doctors couldn’t conclusively find a cause for this brain stroke.

Nevertheless, there was some improvement in Hemachandran’s condition after a month long intense treatment. Again, because of COVID-19 situation they couldn’t keep him in the hospital to finish his whole therapy sessions. He was discharged and he is at home right now. Fortunately, he is able to walk on his own right now and he is getting his therapy via home care. However, his cognitive skills are still not back. He is not able to speak and he has challenges being attentive to something.  To give an example, he is unable to differentiate between two different words starting with a same letter, if we write something on a piece of paper, he is able to replicate it but, having a hard time remembering anything. At work, they have provided a 6 months disability period and based on the assessment at that point and with a Physician’s clearance, he can start working again but that’s a long way from where he is right now.

He has a high deductible insurance plan and is completely not in a situation to afford all of his medical expenses. And for some of the expenses like Airlifting him to a different hospital, doesn’t have a complete coverage from his insurance.  Being an immigrant in a different country in a very challenging economical situation like we are all in right now, we can all understand all the insecurities that his family is going through. His wife is very strong and is providing all the support she can to bring him out of this situation. He is just 34 years old and he has a beautiful 2.5 year old daughter who needs to be cared as well and is eagerly waiting to see her father fully recovered.

We kindly request you all to support our friend’s family and give them a helping hand in this difficult situation. We request your generous contributions to support his family take care of his medical and other related expenses to come out of this unforeseen situation. Your contributions can be of any amount but it is greatly appreciated and collectively it will definitely help our friend and his family to come out of this situation.

Thank you so much.
