Please help Cayson get a bathroom

Donation protected
Cayson Savage needs your help! (So does his mom and dad, Jessica and Jeff Savage)

Cayson is a witty, funny,  sports loving 12-year-old.  Cayson was born with autism and in 2016 he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. (DMD)

Cayson does not currently have access to a bathroom for toileting or bathing!

As Cayson gets older his muscles weaken and deteriorate, this affects his legs mostly at first and he is mainly in a wheelchair now.

Cayson will eventually lose the ability to walk independently and require full support of daily living- bathing, toileting, walking, feeding and dressing.

With DMD, Cayson requires close medical monitoring and is followed by an entire team at CHEO including orthopedic (i.e joint, contractures, scoliosis). Respiratory and cardiac complications are associated with this disease as well.

The news was devastating to Jeff, Jessica and Cayson. The family cannot believe this is happening to their son.

Cayson has had an uphill battle his whole life but DMD has hit the hardest.  His spirits are pretty low as the disease progresses. Cayson used to play outside, riding his scooter, playing hockey. Now, games are different in a wheelchair! Everything in Cayson's life is rapidly changing but his biggest challenge has been the family home and not being able to access the bathrooms for toileting or bathing.

The Savage's home is a townhouse that has 13 stairs to the top-level bathroom, and 13 stairs to the washroom in the basement.

Cayson cannot walk or crawl to either anymore.  Unfortunately, the Savages cannot financially afford to move to a more suitable home.

Cayson's bedroom has been relocated to the main level living room with a commode and urinal. This results in Cayson also requiring sponge baths,  but he is becoming increasingly embarrassed and depressed with this situation.

It has been very challenging for the entire family as he gets older, and his limitations increase.

The Savage family has been working with Access Solutions to build a wheelchair accessible bathroom with a sink, toilet and roll in shower on the main level.  However, the quote for the bathroom is expensive due to the footprint of the house. The cost is $25,000.

The Savage family is a one income household,  with Jeff working outside the home, and Jessica stays home to care for and school Cayson.

The accessible bathroom would relieve a tremendous amount of stress and give Cayson some dignity back.  It really would-be life changing for them all.

Please help if you can.

Thank you!!

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive degenerative life limiting neuromuscular disorder affecting all muscles- increasing loss of functional abilities, weakness and loss of both skeletal and heart muscle.
