Hello, my name is Karen Pitts Allen and I’m raising funds for my granddaughter and her small family who have just delivered a beautiful little boy who is named Benjamin.
Benjamin was born suffering from Edward’s Syndrome (Trisomy 18) and he is in intensive care in the NICU of Helen DeVos Childrens Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Children born with this disorder seldom live to birth or they die at birth. Of those who do live, the expectancy is only one year. Rarely it can be more.
This sweet little boy is nearly 3 weeks old and he’s struggling like a real trooper. The doctors and nurses are amazed at how much his little spirit continues to push ahead!
His Mommy, Molly and his Daddy, Brandon and his 3 year old big brother live in Topinabee, MI and relatives are taking care of Greyson while mommy and daddy are holding vigil in the NICU here in Grand Rapids. It’s a four hour drive for them to go and see Greyson, as mom and dad are staying in the Ronald McDonald House here in GR, for which we are so grateful.
I have been here in GR since Ben was born, trying to provide some comfort and strength to Molly and Brandon while little Ben goes through the testing, evaluations, decisions that the wonderful doctors are doing, albeit the news is not very good. He will be debilitated, but we’re trying to support him to be the best little guy he can possibly be. I must go back to California in 3 days.
God knows we’re praying for him to live but he has many problems. He has three holes in his heart, his cerebellum never developed he’s on a cpap machine for oxygen and he has a club foot, and clenched hands.
The doctors say the Ben will be here in DeVos Childrens for at least 3 more months before they can fix his heart and determine if he can ever go home.
So, of course, mom and dad can’t work during this duration and bills are stacking up. I’m going to try to pay a few of their household bills this week, but I’m on SS and don’t have a lot to offer. And not to mention what surprises might come up for little Benjamin that will not be covered by insurance. And their truck is not not going to be reliable to go back and forth to Topinabee, very many times, in this weather without some upgrades.
So I am asking whomever might find it in their hearts to help these beautiful parents of Ben, so they can continue to keep their finances in order during this stressful time. They want to be able to stay in his room with him and hold him and love him for as long as it takes to help him be comfortable and feel their love in his struggle to survive! And they need to keep their life in Topinabee together for their little guy Greyson, who misses them very much.
God Bless
