Hi, my name is Wendy and I am fundraising for my son Jayden. He is a 15 year old boy who, in the last 16 months has suffered 2 strokes, from 2 brain bleeds.
In November 2020, Jayden, perfectly healthy up to that moment, collapsed at school having a seizure. He was unresponsive.
2 scans later a catastrophic bleed was discovered in his brain stem, and he was placed in a coma and taken to Royal Manchester children's hospital. He remained in intensive care in his coma for 3 weeks, then taken to ward 78 for his rehabilitation.
We were told Jayden may never walk or talk again, he couldnt speak or walk or even hold his own head up and his vision was badly affected, but his hard work and determination paid off, and 4 months later he left hospital, able to talk and walk, but with a wide gait, unsteady walk. He even went back to school part time and was preparing for his mock exams in his core subjects.
Jaydens bleed was caused by an AVM, an arteriovenous malformation. A cluster of tangled veins and arteries in his brain. He had stereotactic radiotherapy in Sheffield in December 2021 to try to shrink it as surgery is too dangerous as it's next to his brain stem.
6 weeks later, on January 13th 2022, it bled again, causing another stroke and hydrocephalus. His left side has been very badly affected this time, after 5 months, he still can't walk unaided and we are still here at the hospital, 5 months later, till next week's discharge date, 1st June.
Our family bathroom is virtually impossible to get him into, and we were hoping to raise funds to put a disabled shower unit room on the landing that he could access easier from his bedroom.
My husband has health issues, I work part time to care for him, and we have already had to borrow money to have a downstairs toilet put in for Jayden, as the occupational therapist last year refused to put in for funding, wanting Jayden to try to be more independent.
He also likes to be in the garden and we need double handrails into the garden all the way down to get him in the garden and into the car, as weekend leave has shown that I have to walk backwards holding onto him, all around the house, and into the garden. It's just not safe for him or me.
Jayden is worse this time, but all I want is my house to be safe for him to come home to and we just can't afford the shower room and I don't want him forever in his bedroom, unable to access the garden and his friends to visit him.
If you could help him, I would be forever grateful. He is an amazing, funny young man, he never lets things get him down and who amazes me every day with his determination to get better. We are very proud of him. We just want to get him home, and to get him to his school prom to say goodbye to his teachers and friends, and carry on with his rehabilitation.
