Playground for Boys & Girls Club in Eagar, AZ

Donation protected
Help a team of ASU students design and build a new playground for the kids and community of the Boys and Girls Club of Round Valley in eastern Arizona.

With winds up to 80 mph in Eagar, AZ it’s no wonder the playground equipment at the local Boys and Girls Club took flight and landed in a nearby field! The kids at the club worked together to figure out how to get the equipment back, but by the time they did, it wasn’t safe to play on anymore. When Collin Smith, a product design professor at ASU, heard about this he had two immediate goals; 1. Get the kids some new equipment, and 2. Give them something that wouldn't blow away! To do this he knew the best path would be to bring in his students from ASU to collaborate with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club to create something sustainable, safe, educational, and fun! The kids are excited, the college students are excited, but now they just need help to fund the project! We’d love to have your support as we try and make something really special for the awesome kids of Round Valley.

Details:

At the beginning of the summer, a group of ASU students and their professor will head to Eagar to meet the kids and staff at the Boys and Girls Club of Round Valley. They will collaborate to come up with a design for some new play equipment for the kids. Then the students will head back to ASU where  to prototype, test, and perfect the kids’ designs. Then at the end of the summer, the ASU students will head back up to Eagar to install the new play equipment! For the ASU students, this will fulfill their required internship that will propel them toward graduation. They are highly motivated and excited to team-up with the kids to create a well-designed play space.

What your money will go to:

- Travel costs for the ASU students (gas, room and board)

- Design process supplies for collaboration with kids (sticky notes, markers, craft paper, etc)

- Playground prototyping supplies

- Playground construction materials and supplies

- Other unexpected project costs

Why you should donate if you can:

Eagar, AZ lies in the heart of the poorest county in Arizona. Many of its children come from homes that fall far below the poverty line. In common circumstances, kids from low-income situations have very limited options for after-school care. The Round Valley Boys and Girls Club opens its doors to these, and all children in Round Valley and offers safe, fun, and educational after-school care. The BAGC is located conveniently close to a community park and playground, but to have something on the actual property would be invaluable. On-site, replacement playground equipment would increase the safety of the kids, and the hope is that something new and fun will entice more kids to seek the Boys and Girls Club as a safe haven. This project will also provide a unique hands-on learning experience for the ASU student design team.

What your support will mean to us:

Collin is married to a Round Valley native and as he fell in love with her, he fell in love with Round Valley and its people, too. He quickly learned that for the best biscuits and gravy, the best green chili and tacos, and the best 4th of July in the world, Round Valley is the place! He has dedicated his career to children and play and has designed bath toys, baby gear, playgrounds, and has spent countless hours researching human-centered design and how to create things that will be sustainable, fun, safe, educational and make kids happy. Finally being able to combine his education and experience with his love for Round Valley is a dream come true. Your support would mean the world to Collin, the ASU students and especially to the kids at the Round Valley Boys and Girls Club.
