Hi there!

My name is Emma and I like to keep plastic off our streets, out of our water ways, and out of the stomachs of aquatic life. I need your help to build at-home plastic recycling machines so that I can keep Portland's trash from littering our environment and turn that trash into durable goods instead! If you know me, you know I've been an advocate for reducing our plastic consumption, increasing recycling, picking up trash in our communities, and providing zero waste lifestyle alternatives. I'm also a biologist who sees the impacts of plastic pollution on wildlife every day. That is what is driving me to do this project.

The machines:
Precious Plastic is a global community of hundreds of people working towards a solution to plastic pollution.

Precious Plastic is a movement started in 2013 as a solution to the problem that is plastic waste. The idea was to share techniques, tools and blueprints for finding and reusing plastic in a way that is about more than just collecting discarded plastic.

Precious Plastic is more than just recycling, it is REUSING.

By sharing the blueprints to the machines above, Precious Plastic hopes to allow everyone to REPURPOSE discarded plastic into useful tools, by shredding and then 'reprinting' the plastic.

The process is simple! Collect discarded plastic, shred it into small pieces and remould it!

Anything from plastic flower pots, CD or DVD cases or disposable coffee lids can be turned into new things!

So what is this campaign for?
The aim is to raise the funds needed to start a Precious Plastic workshop in Portland, OR.

In order to build the machines needed to make this possible, funds are needed to buy materials such as steel stock, motors, and gear boxes. I also need funds for the grinding, drilling, and welding required to put the machines together. I'm working with an accomplished fabricator on the project, and our shredder is already in the works!

I am building both a shredder and an extruder and I expect each to cost approximately $1000 including labor.

Setting up such a workshop would allow for vast amounts of plastic in Portland to be RECYCLED, REUSED and REPURPOSED. An added benefit to such a workshop would be that a large amount of the plastic would be sourced from disgarded plastics, like those thrown away and littered (bottle caps, plastic film, coffe cup lids!!)

Together we can clean up the world's plastic pollution problem.

The repurposed items produced (like those in the images above) would be sold and the proceeds used to hopefully increase production, as well as offering rewards for people turning in their domestic plastic.

I hope to
 - make recycled plastic building materials for use in building tiny homes for the homeless in portland
- collaborate with local artists to make pieces of art out of recycled plastic
- continue coordinating trash pick-ups in Portland and start recycling the trash into durable goods

We've all felt sadenned by images such as this one:

By recycling plastic at home, we can keep these small plastic parts from getting into the ocean and killing wildlife and polluting our seafood.
