Plastic waste recycling Zanzibar

 Zanzibar is known for its white beaches, clear blue water, spices, tropical fruit and rich historical and cultural background. Tourism is a an important income generator for the island. The downside of this popularity is the plastic waste in the streets, ocean and on the beaches.  A local entreprise,  Chako, creates a solution for this problem and by doing so also creates a lot of opportunities. These opportunities include helping unemployed youth and women, given the fact that half of the population in Zanzibar lives below the poverty line.

We are  three students from TU Delft that are enrolled in the minor ''International Entrepreneurship and Development.'' We aim to reduce the amount of plastic waste in Zanzibar. We will attempt to do so by making the tourists take their own trash home. By creating attractive products that contain a compact but large amount of waste, we will transform the otherwise useless waste into a product that has a purpose.

Through the knowledge brought to us by Precious Plastics and together with the employees of Chako Zanzibar, we will build an easy step by step Plastic Shredder and an Injection moulding machine. These machines will help Chako to expand their business and to develop other machines themselves to improve their own equipment over time. To build and prototype these machines and to help the local population in Zanzibar, we need your help!  By promoting awareness about plastic waste, we want to emphasize the importance of recycling plastic. Doing so we can create a sustainable environment.
