Voices: Cultural Legacy Training

Moving melodies, driving rhythms, and evocative harmonies—these are some of the qualities that make Eastern European music so exciting. The music reflects the jostling of cultures, languages, religions, and traditions over centuries in the Balkans and other parts of Eastern Europe.

Planina - Songs of Eastern Europe works to preserve a lasting legacy of these rhythms in our increasingly more digitized world by holding frequent concerts, educating students and youth, visiting with seniors, and supporting art festivals and ethnic festivals with our creative artistic performances, that always bring in music from the heart.

With this campaign we plan to raise funds necessary to support an educational trip of the group to Bulgaria this summer (July 16-31, 2018) to help the group undergo experiential training with several communities of signers in a couple of villages. This "hands, ears and voices- ON" training is crucial for the group to master the intricacies of ethnic singing and experience the emotions and stories behind these songs, so that what we bring back to our growing audiences is much more alive with authentic sound and character. Planina makes an effort to complete a trip like this once every 10-15 years. So this is a big deal .

With your support we will be able to take more Planina members on this trip of a lifetime; offer you, our contributors, valuable records of our progress; and support two local cultural centers. Planina's training trip will include YOU, our supporters. We will follow up with you in our travel blog, and celebrate your support with a contribution to the communities in the form of donations to the cultural center in each of the villages where we will be working.

We ask for YOUR support of our effort to complete this educational and experiential learning journey. Funds raised will be used to pay our teachers in Bulgaria, to defray our trip expenses, and to make donations to the cultural centers in the villages where we will be staying and studying.

Join us in our effort to preserve the sung humanity’s heritage that celebrates the stages of life, revels in nature and the human experience. Your support will help Planina continue to sing in multiple languages, showcase handmade ethnic costumes, and reveal generational ritual practices, as encapsulated in songs from such countries as Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Macedonia, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, and beyond, and from various Rom (gypsy) and Jewish traditions. Become a SUPPORTER of the human SUNG LEGACY with Planina: Cultural Legacy Training.

About Planina

Planina - Songs of Eastern Europe  is a group of singers and instrumentalists from the Denver-Boulder area who perform the haunting and beautiful songs of eastern Europe, including music from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Georgia, Hungary, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Jewish and Rom (Gypsy) traditions from some of those areas.

Planina's material is gathered from ethnographic field recordings, professional recordings made by Eastern European folk artists and ensembles, and material presented at workshops and Balkan music camps in the United States. Many Planina members have traveled to eastern Europe, including group tours to Bulgaria in 1998 and 2005, when members studied with native singers in various villages. In addition, the group has brought teachers from eastern Europe to Colorado for workshops and performances. Much of Planina's music is sung a cappella, ranging from village-style, sometimes dissonant diaphonic duets and call-and-response pieces, to elaborate choral arrangements by modern composers. Other pieces are augmented by the accompaniment of musicians playing traditional or modern instruments.

Wearing authentic costumes, singing in the original languages with regional vocal styling, and providing explanations for the songs as they go along, Planina provides a richly varied musical presentation that is both educational and entertaining. And, in this era of turmoil in the world, Planina aspires to offer its American audiences a small bridge of understanding, through the universal language of music.
