Un Implante Coclear para Matias
Asi comienza esta historia......
27 de septiembre de 2015, el día más emocionante de nuestras vidas, el día en que Matías y Tomas salían de esa hermosa burbujita a sus 30 semanas, a una cajita transparente, llenos de cables y rodeados de médicos las 24 horas… y si, fueron 57 duros y largos días, a Tomas lo operaron de su corazón y a Matías de dos hernias, y bueno después de su emocionante llegada a casa llegaron los cuidados, desvelos, visitas medicas y exámenes de rutina.
A sus dos meses de nacidos les realizamos el famoso tamiz auditivo en donde todo salió afortunadamente bien. Como padres primerizos estamos obsesionados por ver cada paso que dan nuestros chiquitos y bueno al los 8 meses empezamos a notar que Matías no atendía a su nombre como lo hacía Tomás, después de dudas y no aceptación tomamos el riesgo y realizamos nuevamente el tamiz.
Hipoacusia profunda bilateral. ¿Queee? ¿Que es eso?¿ Porque le dio? ¿Ototoxicos? ¿Audifonos? ¿Implante coclear? ¿Qué es todo esto?...
Desde este día nos montamos en una nave en la que nadie nos invito, una nave que nos lleva a un lugar desconocido, a una meta desconocida; un lugar de temor, frustración, de esperanza, dudas y en la que nunca ´puede faltar el amor. No sabemos cuál será su destino, pero lo que sí sabemos es que Papá, Mamá, Tomás y Matías nunca dejaran de luchar.
Y así empieza nuestro camino, el 10 de enero de 2017 Matías, con 1 año y 3 meses de edad “escucha” por primera vez al ponerle sus audífonos. Empezamos a descubrir que todo suena, que todo tiene un sonido y que nosotros con nuestra divina maquina llamada cerebro, escuchamos automática e inconscientemente.
Y es aquí cuando recibimos nuestras más grandes lecciones y animos… Porque? Porque tenemos dos grandes luchadores, que nos llevan por este camino sacándonos sonrisas por segundo. Tomás ha sido la mejor elección de Dios como hermano para Matías, le asignaron una tarea muy importante y desde antes ya la había aceptado, la gran tarea de enseñarle a su hermano a escuchar y a hablar. Con mucha naturalidad desde los primeros días de nacidos, separados por las incubadoras, buscaban la manera de pedirnos que no los separáramos; en casa sus primeras carcajadas fueron viéndose a los ojos, sus primeras travesuras hicieron más ruido que el silencio que escondía Matías, pero Tomas, todo lo sabía y ahora lo entiende más que nadie cuando pide que le pongan los audífonos a su hermano, cuando escucha un perro y le dice tocándose a la oreja que escuche.
Ahora, siete meses después, de terapias de lenguaje, estudios y mucho trabajo, la audiologa, el otorrinolaringólogo y la terapeuta de lenguaje nos dicen que los audífonos no son suficientes para que Matías escuche lo necesario y pueda hablar y comunicarse como todos nosotros.
Y que necesitamos para que pueda hacerlo? Además de muchas, muchas terapias, dedicación y exceso de amor, necesitamos ponerle dos implantes cocleares. Un implante coclear es un dispositivo electrónico de la mas alta tecnología que transforma las ondas sonoras en señales eléctricas enviándolas al cerebro, realizando el trabajo del oído interno y así lograr que las personas con perdidas auditivas puedan escuchar y en el caso de los niños desarrollar un lenguaje. En este caso Matías necesita una cirugía y así poder escuchar, hablar y comunicarse con el mundo.
Queremos lo mejor para Matías y el implante coclear no es un tema simple, esta tecnología y su cirugía es tan especial, tan única, tan bonita, y tan increíble que su costo es demasiado alto por lo que necesitamos de tu ayuda para pagar lo que el seguro no nos cubre.
No sabemos cuál será su destino, pero lo que si sabemos es que Papa, Mama, Tomas y Matías nunca dejaran de Luchar.

A Cochlear Implant for Matías
September 27th, 2015: the most exciting day of our lives, the day when, after 30 weeks in utero, Matias and Tomas were to emerge from that beautiful little bubble. They entered a small transparent box, they were hooked onto many tubes and cables, and they became surrounded by a medical team 24/7. And yes, these were, indeed, 57 long and harsh days, Tomas had surgery to his heart, whilst Matias had two hernias fixed. Upon their very exciting arrival home, they were surrounded by loving care, and along came the sleepless nights, routine medical check-ups and other visits to the doctor.
At two months old, both Matias and Tomas had the well-known Newborn Infant Hearing Screening; thankfully everything came out all right. As first time parents, we are obsessed with seeing each step our little ones take, when they were eight months old, we started noticing that Matias did not attend to his name as Tomas did. After some doubts and a struggle to accept this, we decided to take the risk and have them, once again, have the Newborn Infant Hearing Screening.
Profound Bilateral Hearing Loss: What is this? How? Why? Ototoxicity? Cochlear implant? Hearing aids? What is all of this?
From this day forward, we have boarded a ship upon which no one had invited us. A ship that takes us to some unknown place, to an unknown goal, to a place of fear, frustration, hope, doubts and where love can most definitely never be missing.
On the 10th of January, 2017, Matias, at age one year three months, heard for the very first time in his life after we put his hearing aids on. We started discovering that everything makes noise, that all things make a sound, and that we, using our divine machine, called the brain, can hear automatically and unconsciously.
It is at this stage that we learn our greatest lessons and receive our greatest encouragement. Why? Because we have two great warriors taking us along this path and triggering smiles in us every second. Tomas has been God's best choice of a brother for Matias. He was assigned a very important task, one which he had long ago accepted: the great task of teaching his brother to hear and to speak, very naturally since their first days of life, separated by their incubators, they would look for ways to ask us not to keep them apart. At home their first big laughs came when looking into each other's eyes. Their first mischief was louder than the silence Matias hid. Tomas knew all of this already. Now he understands it all better than anyone, as when he asks for his brother's hearing aids to be put on upon hearing a dog bark, meanwhile pointing to his ear to tell Matias to listen.
Now, after seven months of speech therapy, medical examinations and lots of hard work, the audiologist, the ear nose and throat doctor, and the speech therapist all say that Matias will need more than his current hearing aid in order for him to listen well enough and for him to learn to speak and communicate with all of us.
And what does he need to achieve this? Apart from lots and lots of therapy and an endless love supply, he also requires two cochlear implants. A cochlear implant is an electronic device containing the most sophisticated technology which transforms sound waves into electrical signals, and sends them to the brain. It thus does the job of the internal ear, permitting people with hearing impairments to hear just as we do.
Matias needs surgery in order to hear, in order to talk and in order to be fully able to communicate with the world. We want what is best for Matias, and a cochlear implant is not such a simple issue, this technology and the surgical intervention that it requires, are so unique, so special, so beautiful, and so incredible, that they have a very high cost, this is why we need your support: so we may cover the cost of what isn’t covered by medical aid.
We don't know where life will take them, but what we can be certain of is that Mom, Dad, Tomas and Matias will never ever give up.
