Pete and Kathy, the owners of PKAT, have been a part of the Newport, North Carolina and greater Carteret County community for well over 30 years. Through their business, they have provided aid to many local charities like the NC State Highway Patrol Caisson Unit, Ride for the Warriors, Elks Lodge, The local VFW, The MirIAM’s Rehab Center, Shop with a Cop, Carteret County Domestic Violence Shelter and many others. Pete and Kathy’s business has been in existence since 2013 and that location has rapidly become popular with the local community. Pete is a retired Marine and retired Newport Police Officer. They own the business with Pete’s two brothers, Bruce and Chip Bocker, both retired Navy. After all these years of giving, their business was destroyed during Hurricane Florence. There was no flood insurance because the area where the store is located has never flooded before, but Florence was no normal storm. Hard choices have to be made, one being do they try and reopen. That choice needs to be a community decision. Will the community provide a hand up that will allow PKAT to stay open or not?
Just so you know, there was approximately $500,000 of inventory in the store of which 85% was damaged or destroyed. Currently, they are having a flood sale, selling all items in the store below cost. This sale will allow them to survive just a little longer but without help, they will not make it. We do wish to thank all those in the community that have come to help us clean the store and make purchases so far.
