Pixie's Surgery Fund

Donation protected
Even if you barely know me, I bet one of the things you know about me is me and Erik have pet pigs. The older of our two pet pigs, Pixie (that's her on the right!), is having surgery this Friday, July 29th. During her most recent trip to our vet, they confirmed that she has uterine cysts, and they recommended we use Texas A&M’s large animal vet school to perform the surgery. Everyone we know who has had pigs spayed by A&M says they are the best option for a surgery like this (their veterinary school is among the best in the country). The vet we talked to said that uterine cysts are common in unspayed pigs, and that she’s done this type of surgery hundreds of times (and yes, spaying Pixie is going to be part of the surgery). Due to the way pigs can react to anesthesia, pig surgeries can be riskier than other pet surgeries, but removing the cysts will improve and extend Pixie’s life.

An unexpected bill beyond a certain size can be hard on lots of people and we’re no exception. The price we were quoted for the surgery was $700, due to possible age-related complications and a recommended overnight stay. The doctors recommended doing a sonogram before the surgery, which costs an additional $85. We’re renting a cargo van with a ramp and a decent air-conditioner for two days and the cargo van rental is $265, which comes to a total of $1,050.

UPDATE: Pixie's surgery was a success! She's currently at home resting, and she's doing okay. Unfortunately, what the doctors thought were uterine cysts were actually uterine tumors, which led to a more difficult and costly surgery. The total cost of the surgery was $1,290, and the cost of the van rental ended up being $175, for a total of $1,465.

Maybe you’d like to donate to Pixie’s surgery fund because you’ve seen pictures or videos of Pixie on facebook or instagram, and watching a pig doing pig things helped to brighten your day, even for a bit. Perhaps you want to donate because you’ve gotten to hang out with Pixie for reals and feed her face – feeding a pet pig is a delightful and unique experience that not everyone has gotten a chance to do. Whatever the reason, if you know and like Pixie and you’re able to help us with her surgery costs, every donation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
