My Pipeline Pilgrimage

"I'm so grateful that good people are taking this long, meaningful, and important walk--it will help draw attention to one of the great possibilities our continent faces, the chance to actually leave some carbon in the ground!" -- Bill McKibbon

"Sometimes deep patriotism calls people to take extraordinary actions in response to a clear and present danger. The Compassionate Earth Walk is such a response to the threat of climate change. May they inspire everyone to the same courage and commitment in this time of crisis." - Van Jones, author, The Green-Collar Economy

"To walk for all beings is to walk for the three times, past, present and future. This is a walk that Laura Whitney is doing to magnetize us to protect our environment by preventing the Keystone XL approval from happening. I am grateful to Laura, Shodo, and all those who are "walking their talk" on behalf of our precious earth." ~ Roshi Joan Halifax, Abbot, Upaya Zen Center

EVERY PENNY RAISED WILL GO DIRECTLY TO: The Compassionate Earth Walk to cover costs of food, camping fees, etc. for the walkers.

The Compassionate Earth Walk is a spiritual pilgrimage honoring our place within the community of life.

The human species is at a crossroads.
Our decisions now will profoundly influence the future of our children and of the whole earth.
The Keystone pipeline has become a poignant symbol of the risks of fossil fuels, the tension between economic priorities and human well-being, and the threat of climate change to all life on earth.
We trace its route through the Great Plains with peace and compassion, eager to hear all voices, including the wordless voice of the natural world, blessing the earth with each step, listening, witnessing, and offering service.
The walk is intergenerational, intercultural and interfaith.
Join me.

For a very long-time I have felt called to participate in some form of direct action for a cause I care deeply about. Finally, with the kids grown, the time has come. Tar sands extraction is as ecologically devastating, or worse, as mountaintop coal removal. And many are referring to the possible approval of Keystone XL as "game over" for climate change. My pilgrimage is an embodied prayer to the preservation of all life in its path.

The Compassionate Earth Walk begins on July 2 at the Alberta Tar Sands. Joining hundreds of indigenous leaders and eco-activists for the Healing Walk, we will bear witness to the destruction there. From there the Walk, led by Zen Buddhist Priest, Shodo Spring, will pick up at Hardisty, Alberta and continue all the way to Steele City, Nebraska. Walking the entire pipeline route will take about 100 days. I plan to walk for at least 20 of these days.
By supporting this Walk you are joining a diverse and global uprising in response to the extreme ecological dangers of continued investment in the fossil fuel industry.
Thank you.
