Pinery Fire Memorial Project

‘A CATOSTROPHIC PERFECT STORM’

On 25 November 2015, in the space of just 6 hours, the Pinery fire burnt approximately 82,490 hectares across South Australia’s Mid-North with the loss of 2 lives.

Insurance losses from the fire exceeded $75 million, with 91 homes, more than 400 farm structures and 70,000 livestock destroyed and an estimated 60,000 tonnes of debris and rubble.

This fire was one of the most devastating natural disasters to occur in South Australia with the local community of Grace Plains feeling the brunt of the fire within the first 30 minutes of the fire starting.

The Mid-North  areas that were affected, have battled on to rebuild and move forward. In respect for those who lost and those who never gave up in the battle against this devastating fire, a Memorial is proposed to be established as a lasting record.

The community at Grace Plains have a suitable site for the proposed memorial to record the history of this disastrous event. It is a community owned  area, that is known as Moquet Lee and is named after a local soldier who was killed in World War 1 at Moquet Farm in France.

It is vitally important that history is recorded and this site is pertinent, as it bore the full fury of the fire: it is intended as a permanent pictorial and written record.
The main display will be in a covered structure with adequate parking allowing access all year round.

·         The local residents will build and maintain the whole project with volunteer labour

·         Situated 60 kilometres from Adelaide, the location is beside a major highway means that the site is easily accessible to anyone

·         The site will be open at all times

The strength of the community to rebuild; the determination of those who put their own lives in danger to fight this catastrophic fire and the commitment to never forget those who lost their lives must be recorded for future generations.

Please support this Project in the same way that the community supports those around them.

Your donation will make a difference to many local communities within the Mid-North of South Australia and for that we THANK YOU.
