Swampscott, MA - Victoria Pierro was asleep on the second floor of her family’s home early Tuesday morning when the fan that soothes the 6-year-old suddenly shut off, rousing her from her bed. She headed downstairs around 4:45 a.m., stirring her sleeping mother, Lori.

The innocent gesture of a child waking a parent in the wee hours proved to be anything but routine, and was credited with saving her family from a two-alarm fire.

When Lori Pierro awoke, a fire that officials believe started in a detached garage was spreading quickly to the family home on Humphrey Street. Victoria is being called a hero for alerting her family to the flames.

“I looked up and the kitchen was lit up,’’ Lori Pierro said. “The house inside wasn’t on fire yet, but I could see the glow through the door . . . and I just grabbed her. We ran upstairs, got my sons and my husband and just ran and screamed, ‘Fire! Fire! Fire!’ ”

Everyone escaped, including Pierro’s husband, Anthony, a Swampscott firefighter, and their two sons, Nicholas, 15, and Christian, 12. The smoke detectors had started to sound as mother and daughter headed to the second floor to alert the rest of family, Lori Pierro said.

By the time firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed the left side of the house where Victoria, the youngest child, had been sleeping in her bedroom.

Her family and firefighters are crediting the kindergartner with warning them before it was too late.

“I think if she had been sleeping, we might have had a different circumstance. It just happened so fast,” Lori Pierro said. “She’s our hero.”

Swampscott Fire Chief Kevin Breen said the family escaped with seconds to spare.

The home was a total loss, as was a new Dodge Grand Caravan parked in the driveway. The family has lived in that home since 1997, and before that, the residence belonged to Anthony Pierro’s grandparents, Lori Pierro said.

Most of us cannot imagine the horror of our home burning down, not to mention having it happen as everyone is sleeping. This is supposed to be a joyful time of year where we celebrate the act of giving to our loved ones. Let's honor that tradition by helping this Swampscott family get their feet on the ground.
Every little bit helps. No amount is too small. Thank you in advance for helping this cause. It is greatly appreciated.
