Support LGBTI youth at risk.
Community advocates are raising money for charity PERTH INNER CITY YOUTH SERVICE for an LGBTI Pride Assist Fund.
Just $50 can go a long way in helping this vital service support youth under 26 who identify as LGBTI+.
Donations are tax-deductible and are deposited directly into the PICYS bank account. PICYS will use the funds on a case-by-case fund as every individual young person's situation is different.
Recent studies show that young people who identify as gender or sexually diverse are at least twice as likely as their heterosexual peers to experience homelessness and are likely to experience homelessness at a younger age.
The fund is supported by Pride WA Incorporated, Western Australia's LGBTI culture and community organisation.
Community advocate Paul van Lieshout Hunt said the PICYS Pride Assist Fund was a backstop and urgently needed to support youth at risk.
“Young LGBTI people face a much tougher path than their heterosexual peers. In the current housing market, there is an even higher risk young queer kids could end up on the streets,” Paul van Lieshout Hunt said.
More than 20 young LGBTI people are currently accessing the PICYS services.
“This fund is vital, and Pride WA hope community will support this initiative in any way that we can," the Pride WA committee added.
More information about PERTH INNER CITY YOUTH SERVICE: young people were provided with psychosocial support to achieve independent living and active engagement in the community. This included supported accommodation, case management, mental health recovery plans, etc. The 2016 Annual report can be found under Resource at www.picys.org.au
