Picture Book Project: "The Princess and the Moon"

$786 of $3,500 goal

Raised by 7 people in 3 months
Hello, friends and strangers! I’m Danielle E. Shipley, author of novels and short stories, of fairy tales retold and legends reimagined, and now – for the first time – of a children’s picture book: “The Princess and the Moon”.

>>> When a young girl is startled awake by a singular light in the sky, her father spins her a tale made of sunbeams and stardust – the tale of a remarkable princess and the two opposite hearts that loved her. Adapted from “The Sun’s Rival”, Book Five of The Wilderhark Tales novellas by author Danielle E. Shipley, and illustrated by artist Hannah Vale  (“The Tale of the Two Royal Sisters”), “The Princess and the Moon” is sure to charm readers young and old, both by day and by night. <<<

I am excited beyond words to reintroduce this beloved story to the world in such a special format, but I could really use your help to make it happen!

Each of the book’s beautiful illustrations will cost up to $200 to commission, plus the cost of materials, sketching and storyboarding hours, and an estimated $25-ish per book to print. All told, I’ll probably end up spending a minimum of $3.5 thousand to make this dream a reality – which, for your standard self-published author working a day job to pay the bills, is a little bit /a lot/.

With that being said, every dollar donated by someone who believes in the worth of this project will not only be deeply appreciated, it will also come with rewards!

- Donors of any amount will receive a special thank-you illustration by Hannah Vale.

- Donors of $10 or more will receive one (1) copy of the finished picture book, to have and to hold, to read and to cherish.

- Donors of $30 or more will receive a copy of the book /autographed/ by yours truly.

- Donors of $50 or more will receive book + autograph + a limited edition “The Princess and the Moon” promotional bookmark.

- Donors of $100 or more will receive book + autograph + special thank-you illustration + an “I See You” sticker from my Society6 shop (because see you, I do!).

So, please: Give as you wish; share the link to this fundraiser as you can; watch this space for updates and entertaining tidbits as the project progresses; and I hope you’ll join me in adding “The Princess and the Moon” to the list of picture books you treasure.

Love you to the moon and back,

~ Danielle

Happy Independence Day!

(That’s the holiday celebrating all the hard work of us independent artists, right? Because it totally should be.)

First, a quick look at the numbers. This project is currently 21% funded, and the illustrations for the picture book are roughly 33% completed. Will the dollars coming in catch up to the expenses going out? Not if we don’t continue trying to spread the word! If you haven’t already, precious donors – or if it’s simply been a while since last you did so – do please share the campaign for “The Princess and the Moon” amongst your social circles. United we stand, and all that.

Second, remember my recent release of “Beyond Her Infinity: Tales from Across Wilderhark’s Great Sea”? Well, last week saw the addition of yet another new title to the Wilderhark Tales collection. Introducing, “Windows and Sol: A Bard’s Beginning”!

*

Once upon a time, ‘wandering songster’ was no kind of career for a woman.
Now one minstrel-in-the-making is going to change Wilderhark’s tune.

From the author who introduced Wilderhark Tales’ Gant-o’-the-Lute and Outlaws of Avalon’s Allyn-a-Dale, a new voice rises into a brave ballad of its own: That of a girl with an ear for music and a heart determined to follow wherever it leads, no matter what forces of man – or of nature – stand against her.

“The Soul Shepherdess” – Young Solwen’s fateful encounter with a man o’ music and his sullen apprentice opens her eyes to the road she’s destined to take, along with the hardship that will be her traveling companion.

“In the Window” – Although Harper Rove-a-Day couldn’t feel less qualified to serve as minstrel master to his extraordinary trainee, he just may have what it takes to learn a lesson or two from her.

“The Names She Played” – To hear hidden music is not merely Solwen’s gift, but her only chance in a deadly game with one of the world’s oldest songs.

Tales of singing. Tales of striving. Most of all, tales of true love.

*

As with “Beyond Her Infinity”, the Kindle e-book of “Windows and Sol” is available for a mere 99 cents, features an appearance from one of the powerful residents of Wilderhark’s sky, and makes mention of this GoFundMe in the after-story pages. You can buy it here, if you wish = https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T3TNFXV (And if you read it, I’d love to hear what you think of it in a review!)

Wishing you the best of sunset red, moonlight white, and every blue of the sky,

Progress report!

Donation-wise, we’ve reached just under 17% of the goal. While I’ve not abandoned all hope of chipping away at the approximately $3000 remaining, Hannah Vale has been hard at work producing the first batch of illustrations, meaning that payments are coming due on almost a weekly basis.

To ensure expenses are covered on time, I’ve been picking up a few extra shifts at my day job. This leaves less time and energy for /my/ part of the project, so my plan to get some formatting work done on “The Princess and the Moon” today may have to wait until another weekend.

But it WILL get done! Just as I hope more donors WILL come through soon!

In the meantime, have you seen the glorious title page I unveiled, a couple weeks back? As I said at the time, Hannah has done a dreamy job setting the story’s mood, and from what I’ve seen of the remaining illustrations, it'll only get more gorgeous from here.

Shares and donations more welcome than ever! And don’t forget (because I haven’t!) all the thank-you gifts I’m itching to pass along to my supporters.

Ta for now,
~ Danielle

Hail, friends!

I am somewhat encouraged to observe that the campaign is a little better funded at present than it was during the last update. Much gratitude to those who made it happen, but we’ve still got a long way to go!

In the interest of generating more awareness / interest / funds, today I launched a new book into the world, titled “Beyond Her Infinity: Tales from Across Wilderhark’s Great Sea”. The book is (for the foreseeable future) available only as a Kindle e-book, at a priced-to-move 99 cents. Description:

*

Once upon a time, you knew tales of Wilderhark’s Great Land.

But what of the Isles to the Far East?

In “Beyond Her Infinity”, Wilderhark Tales author Danielle E. Shipley spins two short stories with leading roles from the fairytale world’s minority culture.

“The Queen’s Lady” – Three gallant royal guardsmen learn just how far one Islander will go for the sake of her friend: Into a strange land. Into a cruel exile. Even into the hands of a darkly dangerous power.

“To Walk the Storm” – With his country falling to ruin, a king sends his heirs in search of foreign aid. But the favor of the Isles’ supernatural patron is not so easily won.

Tales of loyalty. Tales of passion. Most of all, tales of true love.

*

Not only are “Beyond Her Infinity” and “The Princess and the Moon” set in the same world, one of the new short stories features an appearance from the moon himself! And naturally, the ‘also by this author’ information in the book’s back pages include a notice about this GoFundMe. Here’s hoping “Beyond Her Infinity” sails beyond the campaign’s previous reach to attract a whole new audience! You can buy it here, if you wish = https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RX21H3M (And if you read it, I’d love to hear what you think of it in a review!)

‘Til next time,
~ Danielle

Hello, all!

As one could easily track, we’ve been stalled out on the donations front for the last several days. Not sure whether it’s more a case of “nobody’s hearing about the campaign” or “everybody’s broke”. (In this economy, who can tell?)

Well, monetarily speaking, I’m in no position to un-impoverish anyone. But art-wise, my efforts to enrich us all continue – as do the efforts of Hannah Vale. While preparations for Renaissance Faire season are keeping her busy (you can see her at the Janesville Ren Faire in Wisconsin, next weekend! https://www.facebook.com/events/2254118137976010/ ), she’s nonetheless making progress on pre-illustrative work for our picture book. For adorable example: These character study sketches of the eponymous Princess and Moon!

Does the sight of that pair not just give your heart a squeeze? I can hardly wait to see more of them! And showing off their fully visualized story to the world, once finished, will be both my pride and pleasure. If you’re able to help make it happen with your donations and word of mouth, you’ll have my deepest thanks – and I daresay both Princess and Moon would favor you with their captivating smiles.

Best wishes,
~ Danielle
