Phoebe's Musical Theatre Course Funding

Donation protected
In January 2019 I was fortunate to successfully pass my audition to secure a place at the Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama (MADD) in Nottingham on a 3-year Professional Musical Theatre Diploma Course starting September 2019. I am hoping to gain financial help towards funding my course.

Drama, Dance and Musical Theatre has been a passion of mine from being 3 years old when I started dance lessons at The Annette Burley School of Dance in Hull. I have attended these classes weekly for the past 15 years and have had numerous opportunities to perform in shows and charity events specialising in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Modern. I have also volunteered at my dance school helping to train the younger pupils in their lessons. My love of Drama and Theatre lead me to not only pursue it as a GCSE subject in 2017 but also as an A Level specialist subject that I am due to complete June 2019. Both dance and Drama has enabled me to grow more confident as a person, broaden my knowledge of the arts and has made me realise how much I love to perform.

Whilst many students that go on to higher education are able to apply for student loans and maintenance loans to help cover the cost of course fees and accommodation, the UK government does not offer such loans to students studying at the college where I have a place. Both my parents are hardworking individuals and from a working-class background, however although they continue to support me in all of my endeavours they are not able to support me financially as they would like to.

As I have the opportunity to follow my dream, I do not want the additional costs associated with the course to be a barrier to my future success. The course fees have been reduced slightly for me and are currently £5,250 per year and my accommodation costs are £440.00 every 4 weeks, which over 3 years will amount to £31,590 (the amount I am pledging to raise).

However I have found gaining access to additional funding to be extremely difficult. I have tried every possible avenue in order to help fund my education, including applying for bursaries, grants and scholarships, and have put plans together to self raise by means of various fundraising activities. So far, the help my family and I have been offered has been limited, and only a select number of people we have contacted have offered to help. As long as I am able to complete the course, my goal after is to work within the performing arts industry in musicals in the West End, in touring production and as an entertainer on board a cruise ship if the opportunity arises. I would also love the opportunity to work as a character performer at Disney World, Florida and one day to give back to the arts community by leading workshops to children who are interested in pursuing a career that I aspire to work in.

I am currently in the middle of my A Level Exams at Wyke Sixth Form College in Hull studying Drama and Theatre, English and Geography. I also studied Music and Drama at secondary school. Due to complications around the timetable, Drama was offered to me as an additional subject, which I had to complete outside of the normal school hours. I also took part in extra-curricular activities including Rock Challenge and Shakespeare Schools Festival which again helped develop my love for the arts. I am a hard working student and my education is very important to me, and I do not want the cost of my course and any subsequent costs to hinder my chances of being successful and achieving goals I have dreamt of from being young.

If you can in any way contribute to my cause, no matter how big or small, it will be greatly appreciated by not only myself but by my family and friends who have been doing everything they can in order to help me over the past year. All money raised will be going directly to the college to cover the cost of my tuition fees and to my landlord to cover the cost of my accommodation. By achieving the aforementioned goals I want to promote the importance the arts has on many people and my musical theatre training over the next three years will bring me one step closer to this.

Below is a link to a website called Easy Fundraising. Easy Fundraising is an app you can download on your smartphone or tablet or access online and collects free donations from online retailers every time you shop online. It costs absolutely nothing to join but so far has raised me more than £90 in the past few months, which will help contribute to helping me with the costs associated with my course. If you would like to sign up the link is below.
