PHILLIS IN LONDON PLAY - PHILLIS WHEATLEY 250

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Ade and I'm an award-winning writer and producer. I founded and run Spora Stories to tell the dynamic stories of the African diaspora.

Please help us to put on a play and related projects to celebrate the 250th anniversary in 2023 of the first book by an African-American.

It was published by a teenage prodigy called Phills Wheatley who overcame huge odds to succeed in the elite world of white male poetry - while she was only 19 and while she was enslaved.

We need funds to produce a high-quality theatrical production i the 250th anniversary of her book, and for youth and community engagement programmes to share her incredible and inspiring story. Young people are motivated by how someone so young and facing so many obstacles found the power andresilience to create. Her extraordinary achievement inspires young people to push forward in spite of the obstacles they too face in life!

Born in West Africa, Phillis was kidnapped aged seven and trafficked to the Americas where she was enslaved in Boston. She came to London in 1773 to publish her book - also only the third book of poetrt by an American woman.

Phillis was celebrated in her day, but (as is so often the case with trailblazing women) has since fallen into relative obscurity. This project aims to correct this erasure and to amplify her voice as the only enslaved woman to publish a book during her lifetime in the 18th century.

Her publication was a landmark moment in Black History, Women's History, literary history, and African, American and English history too. Help us honour and celebrate this pioneering writer. Please donate!
