Surgical Mission to the Philippines

THE NEED

The water and land of Eastern Visayas are rich, but the majority of people who live there are poor. As one of the impoverished regions of the Philippines and as an area primarily dependent on agriculture but lacking in basic infrastructure and access to water, the region is prone to diseases. Along with hypertension, the people of the region are suffering from neglected tropical diseases, dengue, leprosy, and other fatal illnesses that are left unmet due to the poverty, an overflow of need, and lack of access to proper and nearby medical care.

THE SURGICAL & MEDICAL MISSION

In response to the harsh conditions in the region, medical doctors, surgeons, and health workers in the Philippines are organizing new health initiatives, hospitals, and programs for the people of Eastern Visayas.  As part of the thrust of the Council for Health and Development (CHD) in advocating for the people’s right to health, a surgical-medical mission was envisioned to augment the local community-based health program (CBHP). Both the short-term and chronic effects of Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) in 2013 further emphasized the need for necessary and accessible health services amidst overwhelming vulnerability and poverty in the region. Thus, this coming November 2018, coinciding with the 5th anniversary of the devastating hurricane, CHD and partner organizations in the Philippines and abroad shall bring these plans into fruition by conducting comprehensive surgical and medical services that will serve at least 400 individuals from across Northern and Western Samar. Two U.S.-based organizations, the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) and Kabataan Alliance, are also organizing a U.S. delegation of 50 health professionals, workers, and students to participate in this mission.

As a new non-profit organization dedicated to secure quality health, education, and basic human rights for every Filipino, with a vision of a full life for every Filipino, the Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc. is seeking donations in support of this November’s surgical-medical mission.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

Filipinos live across the United States and world, and the diaspora pulls us to connect with our Filipino culture and each other. The Foundation emerged out of the rubble and destruction from Typhoon Haiyan; when the typhoon devastated Eastern Visayas in 2013, U.S. Filipinos in Portland, Oregon responded with a relief and rehabilitation mission, from which the vision of a full life for every Filipino commenced. Typhoon Haiyan is one major hit in the context of vast poverty, and a long term and sustained approach is required for genuine development and advancement of the Philippines; hence, the need for the crucial work of the Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc.

Officially launching on October 20, 2018, the Foundation is dedicated to empower and engage communities in programs and projects for the Philippines to secure quality health, education, and basic human rights for every Filipino. We invite and welcome you to dream with us to empower and engage our communities to provide support for the Philippines.
