Reiki for the Philippines

On December 4th, 2013 I traveled as an independent volunteer from San Francisco to the Island of Bantanyan located in the Central Visayan Sea of the Philippines. An alliance was quickly establish between NGO's and local government officials in an effort to work as smoothly as possible for the greater good of the island. When natural disasters strike - access to water,food, shelter are often the aspects of relief that are brought to the forefront of the arena in the timeliest fashion. Often overlooked is the psycho-social element of a traumatic event on a massive scale. With Reiki being first and fore-most an aid in stress reduction, the introduction of this method of relaxation into a disaster recovery zone is not only ground-breaking but also extremely beneficial to all systems in recovery be that on an individual or community basis.
A story you may all enjoy - one morning I woke up to a box of 2 week old puppies and noticed that one of them was pale and lifeless with giant ticks in his ears. I took him over to the medical tent, which is being run by a Spanish organization, SAMU. They were very accommodating and allowed me to give the puppy some sq fluids. We quickly named the puppy SAMU. Upon returning to puppy box, I was informed that SAMU had been stepped on a few days prior. I cuddled him for a couple of hours and then put him back in the box. He died that night, but his legacy lives on. A few days later, I was approached by the local director of disaster risk reduction and told that because of my actions, they were adding animal response and rescue to their response manual, mainly citing the reason being that animals are so much aware of when a storm is coming, or as in Albert's words ~ "They are our first warning system when there is a storm approaching and we want to offer them the same respect they offer us."
It's been an awe-inspiring journey thus far and I sense that it only gets better from here.
