Have you ever seen a guy trying to cross four lanes of traffic from the Kroger parking lot to reach the Smart Bus Stop on the south side of Maple...hobbling very slowly and hoping the break in traffic is long enough for him to limp across the road?  As a regular Kroger shopper, I have seen this and held my breath in hopes that he would not get hit by a car crossing the busy road.

This summer, I had a chance meeting with this guy:  Millard "Phil" Thompson.  I learned that he is an original employee of the Bloomfield Hills Kroger with 10 years of full-time service behind the deli counter.  He lives at 14 Mile and Stevenson Highway and travels by two busses for two hours each way to get to his 8 hour shift.  He has maintained a good-enough on-time performance to hold his job for 10 years - through erratic bus schedules, winter storms and other obstacles.  I learned that Phil has a bunion on his foot that has severly handicapped his ability to walk.  He suffers constant pain and discomfort standing on his feet at the Kroger deli.  He has contacted a doctor at Troy Beaumont about surgical repair, and is mentally prepared for this procedure and its long recovery.  However, he cannot afford the time off of work.  His union short-term disability does not cover his weekly rent and the medical co-pays are eating into his modest discretionary income.

This circumstance is just not right.  Here is a guy doing all the right things...holding down an honest job and working full time, but he can't get ahead enough to fix a debilitating condition.  So, I felt called to advocate for his needs and seek help among his neighbors and regular Kroger customers to see that he can get this surgery before the winter sets in.  The good news is that Phil has health insurance and his condition is fix-able...Kroger will preserve his job and allow him to return when he is better!

The fundraising goal set here represents 4 weeks of rent to enable Phil to have his surgery and recover in order return to work.  The union short term disability will be used for his surgical co-pays, groceries, transportation costs and any other incedental expenses.

I commit to safeguarding these funds and paying his rent directly following his surgery.
