Phi Kappa Psi Bike Team

Donation protected
The Phi Kappa Psi IN Beta bike team has an incredibly rich history, including seven Little 500 championships and the team was the inspiration for the movie Breaking Away.

The team is in a rebuilding phase as the chapter recolonizes, and funds are needed immediately to purchase equipment and training tools necessary to return Team Phi Psi to the front of the pack in the Little 500 this spring.

Phi Psi alumni brothers are being asked to make a donation in support of this effort.  For all donations of $125 or more, the team will send you a custom designed long sleeve bike team t-shirt.  As well, 20% of all donations received by December 31, 2017 will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington.  This donation will also greatly assist the house meet its Philanthropy requirement for the current school year.  Donations of any size are helpful and appreciated!

Meet your 2017-18 Phi Kappa Psi bike team:

Albert LaValle (Captain) and Wes Duke
: Albert and Wes were the foundation of this team’s development. We can’t say enough about how impressive they are as young men and competitive athletes. Albert has demonstrated exceptional fitness and racing skills and has all the qualities to be a future All-Star and Hall of Famer!  Wes is fantastic individual with great potential on and off the track. Wes has shown tremendous heart and physical power and motivation to compete with the best riders on the track.  C. North Woods swam on the IU swim team (as did Wes) and switched to be a tri-athlete. He pledged to PKP in November and we see North as a key part of this future championship caliber team. Mo Hakim is also new to cycling but he is a physical beast and will transform his swimmer body into being a cycling phenom. He has the heart of a lion and the ability to be a very good racer and great team leader. Brian Emmons is our newest rider and hails from Bloomington. Brian is committed and working hard to gain miles and form. He is being pushed hard and has the desire and ability to compete for a spot on race day.  Eric Mercker also has recently joined the team, was a high school swimmer and wrestler, and is working his tail off to put in the time and miles to compete next spring.

Our alumni coaches are Dan Gaz, ’05; Ed Hawes, ’76, and Scott Gilreath, ’76. Dan is our technical coach and is a PKP all-star rider from the mid 2000's. He  is now a Physical Activity and Assessment Manager for the Mayo Clinic.  Still an avid rider, he brings a wealth of state of the art L5 fitness training and race knowledge to help our rookie team prepare to compete at the highest level.

Ed is helping with coaching, recruitment, and team communications to help the riders in their collective journey to rebuild Phi Psi’s legacy of Little 500 success.  Ed is an all star rider from 1976-77.  Gil is back as team manager handling logistics and generally keeping this team organized and moving forward.  He was the team coach in 1976-77-78, including our last L5 Win in 1978.

Little 500 Qualifications will be on Saturday, March 24, 2018 with Little 500 on April 21, 2018.  Join us!

Team and rider updates and info will be posted on our Facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/phipsiiu/

Thanks to everyone for your support and your help in bringing back the Phi Psi bike team!
