PhD Funding for The First Year

Hi Guys,

My name is Bill Kamtchou, I'm 22 and I am currently a Masters student in University College Dublin in Ireland. I'm studying Space Science and Technology. I've started this GoFund me campaign to help pay my tuition and expenses fees for my PhD in Medical Physics. Let me tell you a little bit about myself.

I was born in Cameroon and my parents immigrated to Ireland when I was four years old and I've lived here ever since. I've always had an admiration and aptitude for science and math, this naturally transcended into physics.

At the beginning of my college studies I was very attracted to astrophysics and space science. I wanted to understand the Universe at its largest scales. So I enrolled in an Astrophysics Honours Bachelor and graduated in 2019.  During my applications for third level courses I had also considered applying for general medicine because I had and still have an immense interest and respect for healthcare. Nonetheless, I decided against it because I didn’t want to give up studying and applying mathematics day to day. During my undergraduate we didn’t get to do much research work so I did not know if I would enjoy it or be good at it.

However, an opportunity came during my final year project on solar filaments. It felt amazing to be carrying out cutting edge research that no one had done before and be able to say that I contributed to physics with my work. More than anything it felt like the culmination of four years and a chance to show the skills and knowledge I had acquired. Writing up my dissertation and submitting it gave me a thrill like no other. The PhD students I shared my office with advised me that if I enjoyed doing research this much than a PhD was for me but that it would be another four years of hard work. I’ve never been one to shy away from hard work so am more than ready to take the challenge.

I have given my future a lot of thought, as in what I’d like to achieve. As physics is so broad, it is difficult to really focus on an area and become an expert. Initially, I thought that a career in astrophysics was the one and only path for me. During my last weeks of undergraduate, I started reconsidering studying medicine because I really wanted to help people and have an impact in the day to day world. Medical physics presents the opportunity to use the physics knowledge I have gained to genuinely help people. Moreover, using radiation, nuclear and detector physics, which I have had extensive training in, would be something of great interest to me. I want my work to mean something in the here and now and to mean something to the everyday person. I truly believe medical physics presents an opportunity to combine my physics training and keen interest in healthcare. Unfortunately, realism and idealism rarely mix. I have spent all my savings to pay for my Masters degree and more than anything in this world want to start my PhD and have an impact in this world. I want to help people, save them if possible.

I would be eternally grateful for any donations that would bring me even an inch closer to my goal. Thank you for taking the time to read my campaign.

God Bless
