Tethered spinal cord syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column. These attachments cause an abnormal stretching of the spinal cord. This syndrome is closely associated with spina bifida.
She had her first surgery at about nine months, we had CFS complications and her spinal fluid was coming out of her back. The doctors went back in and repaired what seemed to be her tissue being weak and tearing.
Shorty, after she was still leaking spinal fluid. However, this time around. It was collecting in her spine; creating a lump on her spine. I had to bring her in to the hospital every other day to have it drained. Working in Kentfield, Ca; living in Richmond and having to drive to Sacramento. Was very draining. But, you must do what you must.
Soon after; it was determined that my daughter had spinal meningitis. Which meant, surgery once again. All of this happening within a couple of weeks. All while having to leave my son with family and friends while I took care of my daughters’ health.
Doctors, were not sure if she would ever walk and had no idea how the meningitis would impact her life.
Fast forward; Reyna never crawled, she rolled around to get to where she wanted. She walked about a week after her first birthday. She is a tough cookie. She has overcome so much in her short life.
At age 5; she underwent another cord release. No complications; everything went smooth. Thank goodness….
Reyna has been as normal as any other child; she had done gymnastics and cheer as a child. She graduated high school and went on to attend Sonoma State University. She has never let anything, or anyone hold her back.
Unfortunately, through the years Reyna has suffered lots of discomfort and pain. It was decided that she would have exploratory surgery. Originally scheduled for November 16th. However, it was a dry run and we were sent home.
Finally, on January 8th 2018, Reyna underwent her surgery. The doctor was able to remove scar tissue and make some room for her spinal cord. Which was a plus. However, that night Reyna started with a terrible headache. It was so bad that it hurt more that her back. They tried to control the pain and we went home after 5 days.
We went home on Saturday the 13th and were back in the ER on the 20th. An MRI showed she had a CFS leak with lots of inflammation. She was transported to Roseville Kaiser. Where her neurosurgeon is. On January 22nd, Reyna underwent her CFS repair. She was in the hospital for about another week. Sorry; I can’t recall the exact date as I don’t even know what today is (sadly) Reyna was sent home with a PICC line and I had to administer her medication every 8 hrs. around the clock. With a little help from her brother and boyfriend. Even having her friend helping out once.
On Feb 9th, Reyna had a post op appoentment and the neurologist sent her to have an MRI. The MRI was done on Feb 13th the same day her PICC line came out. Or was it the following day? Maybe, not 100%
Anyways, on valentine’s day; Reyna received a call from Dr.McNatt. The MRI showed leakage. So, the next morning, we were at Kaiser Roseville at 5:45am for the 2nd CFS leak repair. We went home Monday the 19th.
This Saturday the 24th, we spent the day in the ER at Kaiser Oakland, where I had to get loud and angry with the staff demanding an MRI due to Reyna’s symptoms. Let’s say; I got what I wanted after the ER doctor pulled strings and was able to get a hold of DR. McNatt. Confirming that everything I was saying was correct.
So right before midnight Reyna was transported back to Roseville Kaiser. She’s been on pain medications that are doing nothing to help her. She isn’t eating; because she feels sick to her stomach.
So, as I set up this go fund me account. Reyna, is in surgery. She was taken in a bit past 9 am today. Monday Feb. 26th it is now 12:14 and she is still in there. It was only supposed to be a two-hour procedure. However, this shall pass and we will make it through this.
The reason this page is being made, is to help us out while she continues to recover. As of now we are looking at possibly two weeks of hospitalization at this time. Given the past couple of weeks. I can honestly say. I have no idea when this nightmare will be over.
Reyna, was supposed to start her 3rd year at Sonoma State and had her heart broken when she had to take leave. She was working part time as well. Now that she has had all these complications. We have some bills piling up and being that we live so far from Roseville, everything is taking a financial toll on us. She has a car note and so forth. So, any help will be greatly appreciated. As my close friends know; I am not one to ask for financial help.
Thanks in Advance
