Cakes 4 Kids [cakes4kids.org] is an exciting new educational baking program that teaches adults with developmental disabilities valuable life skills while providing homeless children with homemade birthday cakes.
The program combines the efforts of Resources for Human Development [rhdri.org], an arts-based studio program that helps adults with developmental disabilities reach their goals through the development of new skills, and Birthday Wishes Boston [birthdaywishes.org], a nonprofit that throws birthday parties for homeless children.
Local baker Ginevra Davis of Cakes by Ginevra [cakesbyginevra.com] will teach Cakes 4 Kids classes out of RHD locations, and the cake from each class will be donated to a homeless child's birthday party at a local shelter. A typical class will have students work through planning, baking, and decorating a layer cake from scratch. Cakes are personalized in theme, flavor, and size for each child's party, so that students can become familiar with a wide variety of frosting and decorating techniques.
Although cake decorating is not usually taught alongside traditional art forms, baking can be an incredibly therapeutic outlet for creativity and self expression. Cakes 4 Kids classes also help students gain focus and confidence, develop a practical skill, and most importantly, have tons of tasty fun!
In order to get this program going, we need help from people like you. Donations are needed to pay for equipment, stock the RHD kitchen with high quality ingredients, and cover the costs of transporting the cakes to the shelters. Any amount helps us make the world that much sweeter!
