In September 2012, Ian Gunnell was diagnosed with Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm. He was on a maintenance plan until June 2017, when he was told that things were looking well and he would not need to be back to the hospital for a year. Ian began having pain at the end of August and went to the doctor for tests. He relapsed on August 28, 2017.
Ian passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in their embrace on February 15, 2019.
