Henry was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2 1/2. We had waited over a year for his diagnosis, had endured so many medical appointments and although we suspected what the outcome would be, you never truly understand the impact it will have on your families lives. It's crushing, and you as a parent feel you have failed. We love Henry with all our heart and wouldn't change him for the world. He brings us joy every day and makes us stronger.
Since Henry's diagnosis, we have listened to all the advice the specialists have given us and followed a strict approach to Henry's development.
Henry is non-verbal (which means he doesn't speak at all) he has said mum and da-da but these have been a fleeting moment. He is becoming increasingly frustrated with the world around him, from his lack of ability to communicate his needs. It's easy for us as Henry's parents to understand what he wants, but to others he comes across as being a badly behaved child. What most people won't understand is that Autism is a neurological disability. Which means Henry doesn't process anything in the "normal" way. Most people see Henry and think he's just like any regular child because they can't see his disability.
He is a cheeky, clever and handsome little boy! He has a giggle that melts your heart and can be the most affectionate little boy ever! He has recently started to give kisses!!
Since Henry's diagnosis we have found the lack of support from specialists and the utter lack of an explanation for what causes Autism ridiculous. We have only ever seen an occupational therapist once, we were handed a leaflet on sensory processing disorder for Autistic children and have since been left to figure out what's best to do for Henry. Specialist sensory equipment costs a small fortune but the benefits are enormous for Henry's Development. Henry sees a speech and language therapist every 4 months for a 1 hour visit. This in our opinion is not nearly enough for someone who will struggle with communication his whole life.
We have taken it upon ourself to research alternative treatment/therapies for Henry to give him the best possible life. We are currently trying to fund Private Therapies for Henry.
