Thank you Furness Hospice nurses

Hello, my name is Bridget Orr, and I'm the girl on the second left at the front row. This was taken on April 30 2016 on my big brother Dave's wedding reception (that's him third from right on the back row). It's a rare photo for all of us, as it's the only picture of my Mum (far right, bottom row) and all eleven (yep, ELEVEN) of her sons and daughters.

Sadly for all of us, it was the last ever. The second oldest brother Eddy (far left, top row) was diagnosed with lung cancer in the middle of January this year, and this was a few days after he found out that this spread to his brain. Nevertheless, he performed his Best Man duties in typical Eddy style, remaining calm throughout our hubbub and his own pain.

At least once a week, our family has travelled up and down the Scotland/England border to give him moral support, and unfortunately most recently, physical care during his last days. We've gotten to know the nurses from St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston (http://www.stmaryshospice.org.uk), as the weeks went on and all of us admire their care, attention and reassuring knowledge and experience when looking after Eddy.

The Hospice at Home nurses  treat patients like Eddy in homes throughout Barrow and the South Lakes, and judging by the amount of windy roads they would have to take in their job, they need the petrol money more than we did.

I never wanted to write this message to you. Eddy has always been cheerful and adventurous, whether it involves snorkelling in the Red Sea, cycling from Glasgow to Belfast for children with neuroblastoma and most terrifying of all, letting his old home get redecorated by Channel 5's House Doctor.

He never let getting dumped, unemployed or even losing the sight in one eye dim this spirit, and we want him to keep inspiring us, especially his stepchildren, nieces and nephews.
