** Dear Cosecha family and supporters -

My name is Lucia Allain, and I am one of the Cosecha volunteer organizers. Cosecha is a movement that is fighting for permenant protection, dignity and respect for the 11 undocumented Immigrants living in the US.  I am taking a big risk and reaching out to you all for support in this moment, something which I am not used to doing. My family, which immigrated from Peru to this country, needs your help to raise $6,885 to get residency for my mother and brother and allow me to stay organizing in Cosecha while doing so.

Not so long ago, I was able to adjust my status and it has been a heck of a ride. I always had the dream that Dream Act would pass and I would be able to see all my friends documented. But as time passed by I felt guilt because only I was able to adjust my status.

When I received my green card for the first time, I felt ashamed. I felt that I had betrayed the movement, I still do.  When I see my mother crying from back pain due to her job, I feel her pain. I hear my little brother asking me, should I drop out of school since we can barely make a living?

When I joined the DREAM movement in 2007, I felt that I got my family back. When I migrated to this country it was just my mom, my brother, and me, and organizing gave me those primos and primas that I missed. In 2016, I decided to go to the first ever Cosecha Assembly and it changed my life forever. Not only did I feel like I had a family again but I was ready to fight again, this time for all 11 million.

It's been officially half of a year since I decided to drop my freelance clients, and look for a sitter job and work with Cosecha part time. I wanted to do this, for my mom, my brother and my community, my tamalera who wakes up at 4am to sell tamales and feed her children, for the construction worker I see at the train station every morning when I’m on my way to my sitter job, for those students that have to hold a job, maintain in school (with some sort of GPA that won’t get you kicked out of school) and still walk with a smile everywhere they go.

When I was told that I could do this full time I was super stoked but what I didn’t know was that the folks doing this full time were doing it in volunteer simplicity, where we do not receive salaries for the work we do. I was worried, as someone who is the head of the family when it came to money, I couldn’t do that to my family. However, it reminded me how I began to organize. This wasn’t something new. When I started to organize I didn’t get paid, I was doing it because it was a need, I needed to share my story.

**I now have the chance to petition for my mother and brother to get residency in this country and eventually citizenship. To pay lawyer’s fees and immigration fees, our family will need a total of $6,885. Because I do not make a salary with Cosecha and my brother is in school, our family cannot come up with this amount by ourselves. In Cosecha we believe that all we need is within our community, which is why I’m reaching out to my community in this time of need. ***
