Peter Turano passed away at home surrounded by family on Sunday, April 2nd, 2023.
A majority of Peter's life was spent working for Middletown public schools, most specifically Middletown High School. Many people know him as Mr. Turano, Mr. T., or coach. He began his career teaching at MHS as an English teacher in 1966, and eventually pursuing his passion for sports by becoming the JV and Varsity Basketball coach in 1967 for 18 years.
As Peter enjoyed coaching, he also took up the title of Middletown High School’s golf coach. He was a dedicated coach for decades and deservingly was inducted into the Middletown Athletic Hall of Fame. Eventually, Peter became the Dean of Boys for over 10 years. Additionally, Peter had a career as the dean of boys at Gaudet Middle School and assistant principal at Portsmouth High School. He retired in 1990.
Peter holds a legacy at Middletown High School, as hundreds of students over the years will remember him for the lasting impact he had on all of them, through education and coaching.
Peter’s legacy will live on through the Peter Turano Memorial Scholarship, founded by his family.
This scholarship will be awarded to one or multiple students attending Middletown High School that will be pursuing a degree in education following graduation.
Peter would want us to send him out with a bang. We will be holding a celebration of life on June 9th, 2023 at Kempenaar’s Clambake Club in Middletown, RI.
This will be the start of an annual fundraiser that the family will be hosting in memory of Peter, to celebrate his life and raise funds for the scholarship in his name.
If you cannot make it to the celebration of life, or would like to donate here, we appreciate it so much.
To Peter! We love you!!
