Coronavirus Protective Equipment - NYC Hospitals

As of 3/27/2020 at 10:30 AM, there are 25,398 confirmed cases of COVID-19, out of which 365 have resulted in deaths, all in NYC alone.

As a healthcare professional, I would have never imagined a time where heightened public health risk would result in lowered standards for patient care. This has become such a major issue that hospital administrators and even the CDC are loosening requirements. The CDC has suggested that healthcare workers use bandanas or scarves during face mask shortage (https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/03/10/face-mask-shortage-prompts-cdc-loosen-coronavirus-guidance/).

Currently, New York hospitals and frontline workers are running low on key PPE items (face shields, goggles, surgical masks, medical grade n95 and n100 masks, gowns and gloves) that are crucial to ensure our safety and ability to continue working and help fight COVID-19. We are only just entering the upswing of COVID-19 cases in the US, and it has become painfully clear that there simply are not enough pieces of PPE (personal protective equipment) to protect our healthcare workers on the front line. Simply put, the masks and gowns we have are already in short supply and will quickly run out. Given that New York State has nearly 50% of all Coronavirus cases in the United States (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html) and approximately 5% of the world’s total Coronavirus cases (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/22/nyregion/Coronavirus-new-York-epicenter.html?referringSource=articleShare), it is critical that all healthcare professionals on the frontline are properly protected and equipped. Our healthcare system is only as good as its frontline clinicians, and the better equipped with protection, the better care we will be able to provide to others. Flattening the curve will NOT help if health care capacity keeps dropping.

Our aim is to collect donations so that we can order and distribute PPE items to healthcare professionals in New York City hospitals. Additionally, we will be making use of the amazing skills our volunteers have to make PPE from commonly available items found on store shelves and Amazon, so donations will also go towards buying supplies to make the protective gear. 100% of the funds will go towards making, acquiring, and distributing PPE to medical personnel in the hospitals throughout NYC. Ideally, we can help bridge any gaps while larger government initiatives are being implemented so that our healthcare workers can stay safe.

Every dollar counts. Here are some rough estimates of how far your donations will go:

$10 - 5 x N95 masks

$20 - 10 x N95 maks

$50 - 35 level 2 surgical gowns

$100 - 500 pairs of surgical gloves

$250 - One doctor or nurse kit (estimated gloves, masks and gowns needed for one hospital nurse or doctor for 7 days)

As someone on the frontline, I want to say a big thank you for your support.  This is personal for me as it is for so many of you. We all know people that are putting their lives at risk every day so that we can stay healthy and safe.

I know in times like these we want to find ways to help. We are staying at home, practicing social distancing and emotionally supporting friends and family. Hopefully you will see this as a great chance to do something more.
