Periods Don't Stop For Pandemics

Growing up, I struggled with the stigmas and taboos surrounding menstruation. It wasn't until I discovered the menstrual equity movement that I felt empowered to speak my truth and effect change through my organization Petticoats Rule. This year, as a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, I connected with an organization in Nigeria called HAFAI, Health Aid For All Initiative. I shipped them 100 sustainable, reusable, menstrual pad kits, and we’re now launching a joint fundraising campaign.

-Enhancing Opportunity, Dignity and Education
We are partnering to make change and your kind donation will help us get there.
-Every $2 funds a menstrual reader/education guide.
-Every $10 funds a reusable menstrual pad kit for one girl, containing six pads, soap, and a pair of panties.
-Every $150 funds a sewing machine that provides economic opportunity and empowerment so women can sew and sell their own kits.

The stigma, myth, and taboo of menstruation is a human rights issue. In rural Nigeria, menstruation is often associated with impurity, secrecy, shame, and discrimination, which influences how the issue is handled at home.
During HAFAI’s work in rural communities, they found that girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspapers, feathers, cornhusks, and dirty rags, in fact, anything they can find, but still miss up to 2 months of school every year. When girls cannot go to school and women cannot work, a society loses half of its socio-economic and political potentials. According to a UNICEF 2012 report, menstruation is one of the main reasons why girls miss days from school in Nigeria and other developing countries.
A Success Story: Lilian, a Student and Menstrual Kit Beneficiary
When HAFAI visited a Secondary School in a rural community in Abuja, they came across 15 year old Lilian who had to choose between buying sanitary pads or paying for school. Lilian would wear two or three pants while on her period because she didn’t have pads and didn’t want to miss school. She could barely concentrate in class or play with her friends. Lilian was very excited to receive a menstrual hygiene kit and wished all girls in her community had access to kits.
