Children who read books at an early age tend to score higher in math, spelling and vocabulary tests as they advance in school. Reading is the foundation of academic excellence. Unfortunately, Peru has over 1.3 million illiterate people with the average Peruvian reading less than one book a year. This is caused by a weak educational system and lack of reading culture at home.
On July 2016, a group of educators decided to do something about the situation. We launched "Los Pequenos Lectores de Chaclacayo." The mission of the organization is to develop a reading culture in Peru, particularly among children that have limited to no access to educational resources.
"Los Pequenos Lectores de Chaclacayo" meets twice a month on Sundays for three hours. The classes are divided by age and by reading level where children are given time to read and then discuss key takeaways from the assigned material. We also serve the children a healthy meal during class.
We started in 2016 with 25 children (2 to 12 ages) and now have 45 kids.
We converted my childhood home in Monte Santa Ines Chaclacayo into a school which has become too small with the growing student body. We're reaching out for your help so that we can build a classroom that can fit all the kids who are eager to learn and grow through reading.
These children have seen an improvement in their reading comprehension skills and vocabulary. With your help, we can accomodate more kids and accomplish our goal of creating a reading culture among children throughout Peru.

Este programa tiene un horario quincenal de 3 horas donde se apoya la lectura con activides lúdicas dirigidas. Los libros están clasificados acuerdo a las edades y niveles de comprensión. Despues de la lectura grupal los niños desarrollan actividades dirigidas con el propósito de enseñarle lo importancia del trabajo grupal, el respeto a las reglas, etc. También se les provee un refrigerio saludable. Contamos con ocho voluntarios algunos de ellos estudiantes universitarios, profesores activos.
METAS
Nuestras metas son:
Primero promover el hábito de la lectura grupal e individual de la familia.
Segundo a través de la lectura el participante descubrirl’(á que el/ella será capaz de cambiar su futuro.
Tercero entenderán que en toda sociedad hay valores y que es muy importantes respetarlos.
Cuarto el interés por la lectura del lector participante creará en otros el interés.
Por leer y así cada uno de ellos hará efecto multiplicador dentro de su grupo en el cual se desarrolla. Que mi comunidad progrese,que el futuro de esas familias sean de progreso,donde los padres tomen su responsabilidad y den el ejemplo de perseverancia en el hábito de la lectura.
