Help me document and showcase the stories of musicians in the Gulf South!
This campaign will directly fund the creation of audio, video and photographic content that will be shared on community radio and the web.

About me and the idea:

I have a background in photography and museum production. Both deal directly with history, preservation and documentation. My real passions, however, are music and the people who create it. I grew up in North Florida, collecting records at flea markets and seeing Bo Diddley perform at school functions (crazy, right?!).

Beginning in 2010, I started researching, photographing and documenting the histories of musicians based in the Southeast. This led to my first involvement in community radio in Gainesville, Florida. Now residing in New Orleans, Louisiana, I host a weekly radio program on WWOZ. My radio show focuses on 1950s-1970s blues and soul music I’ve amassed as an avid record collector. It grants me opportunities to host guests in the WWOZ studio, meeting, face to face, the people who create the music I love such as Rev. John Wilkins, Cedric Burnside, Bobby Rush and Leo Bud Welch. However, most of the interviews are very condensed and usually focus around promotion of a performance in New Orleans.

In this project, my goal is to showcase oral histories in greater depth, documented through interviews with blues musicians in their homes, favorite bars and restaurants and sites of importance. These interviews could be edited for both radio and web based programming (think short documentaries) and enhanced with still photographs, music, and sounds from the trip.

The launch of this project will send me through Louisiana and to North Mississippi, stopping along the way to make photographs, video and audio interviews with musicians, producers and their friends and relatives who contribute to the culture of this region. My first set of interviews are scheduled in late June, 2017. I will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, and spend time with Bobby Rush (2016 Grammy winner) and then to the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, where I am scheduling other interviews in the area.
