Pensacola High School Baseball Program

Our story, like many others, is far too common but simple. We are fundraising for the 2020-2021 Pensacola High School baseball season. You may not know this, PHS is the oldest high school in the state of Florida. We are proud of this fact and have incorporated the school's 1905 origins into our uniform logo.

My name is Jack J. Gattenio. I head the Pensacola High School Baseball Program. I have an excellent staff of assistant coaches and our player roster is growing. In an attempt to grow the number of players in the program, we have abandoned the "pay-to-play" philosophy. Our program is 100% free to any student-athlete wishing to play baseball for the PHS Tigers regardless of skillset. We love to coach! But to put players on the field we need to put money in the bank.

Ultimately the program would like to field both a Junior Varsity and Varsity squad. However, our current numbers (15-20) only allow for a Varsity team. Our goal is to outfit 35 players head to toe plus gloves and cleats within the next two seasons. Believe it or not, we have student-athletes who avoid joining the program for the simple fact they do not own a glove or a pair of cleats. That is a sad fact we are working to change. The coaching staff has become resourceful in obtaining equipment, that with some TLC, can be used by players that are without.

We are a growing program. Last season, the Tigers won more games than the prior two seasons combined before being shut down due to pandemic concerns. The shutdown put a damper on fundraising. The shutdown has caused fundraising problems for many other programs as well.

If you are familiar with high school level athletic programs, you already know the amount of funding it takes to complete a season. If you are unaware, I would like to share with you where some of the funds are spent. Umpires' costs are approximately $2,000 for 10 home games. We issue each player 2 hats and 2 pairs of game socks which with the mandatory minimums run $1,695.  Game balls cost $70 per box. And upgrading catcher's gear to meet the new NOCSAE standards run $300+ per catcher.

Add field maintenance, travel costs including the yellow bus and food, bats, gloves, and subtle things like ant and wasp killer... you get the point!

As you can see, costs add up quickly. And these costs are for a Varsity team alone.

The Tigers Baseball Team is literally a family. We have four sets of brothers. One is a set of twins, and there are three brothers from another family. The importance of growing our numbers is obvious when you consider our underclassmen numbers - three. Each season we are senior-heavy. This can only be corrected by implementing a JV squad. Our fundraising efforts assist in reaching the goal of two squads.

Your contribution will be put to good use. Please share. Our success is your success!

Sincerely,

Jack J. Gattenio
