Penelope is now 4 weeks old :) She was admitted to Texas Children's Hospital NICU 2 on November 8, 2014 for paralysis of the left arm and swelling in her shoulder. After numerous tests, labs, xrays, and MRIs doctors have determined there was an infection in the nerves of her shoulder and the humerus bone. The cultures haven't grown enough to know exactly what the infection(s) are but Infectious Disease and the Orthopedic Surgeons are suspecting Staph until they are able to rule it out.
Emergency surgery was done on 11/8/14 and we were initially told she would have total paralysis of the left arm with little to no recovery BUT fighter as she is and with an outpouring of prayer, she is moving her hand a little! We found out this morning that the infection is a little worse than what doctors had initially expected so she will remain at Texas Children's for a minimum of 6-8 weeks. Texas Children's is approximately 50 miles from our home so mommy will be bedside with her for the duration. Costs have become increasingly high and we have just been told that medicaid and medicare recipients are the only ones eligible for parking fee assistance ($12/day) and food money assistance. So currently I am not parking my car here and am left without a vehicle and am having to eat out for meals with the closest family member living 160+ miles away. After recovery Penny will be required to undergo long-term Physical Therapy, which is not covered 100% by insurance. Thank you for your continued prayers, sweet thoughts, and messages.
