Her name is Penelope Lourdes Garcia and she was born with a Rare Syndrome called Goldenhar Syndrome, also known as Craniofacial Microsomia. Our sweet Penny's syndrome is a congenital birth defect which involves deformities of the face. It usually affects one side of the face only. Penny was born with multiple craniofacial differences including microtia, facial asymmetry, macrosomia, congenital heart disease, kidney abnormality and hypothyroidism Penny weighed 6 lbs 4 oz and was born on May 20th 2018 at the University of Washington Hospital.
Penny will be having surgery on November 21, 2018 at Seattle Children Hospital in Washington. After a recent appointment, Doctor's performed a VFSS ( Video Fluroscopic Swallowing Study) & found that when she drinks milk out of a bottle it goes into her lungs. The reason this happens is because she doesn't know how to swallow properly. This causes her to aspirate, the milk goes into her airway, then to her lungs. On top of that Penny has a tongue tie and bifid uvula. As the days go by Penny becomes stronger and more aware of her surroundings. Penny is now old enough to pull the current feeding tube from her nose and is a tricky to put it back in. This upcoming surgery is for her to get a G-tube (Gastrostomy tube) which will be in her stomach to prevent milk from entering her lungs.
Penny has multiple cysts in her kidney, two holes in her heart, & microtia of the ear. She will be getting ear reconstruction when she is older. Penny's hearing is not the best therefore she will need a hearing device soon. In December Penny will be getting glasses due to the dermoid in her left eye, which is tissue that did not form all the way. Once Penny is old enough she will be having jaw reconstruction because the left side of her jaw being smaller than the right side of her jaw. Due to Penny's medical condition she has many appointments that require traveling and sometimes staying the night which can be expensive. When Penny is not at the hospital she loves meeting new people. She is a very happy girl, she likes kisses and cuddling with Mom and Dad but especially from her big sister Ariella.
Penny's Mom & Dad ( Bianca Rodriguez & Ricardo Cazares ) do their best to care for their daughters. Ricardo works long hours at his full time job to support his family while Bianca is a dedicated stay at home mommy. They love Penny so much and have done everything in their power to keep up with bills but have fallen short recently. This fundraiser was created to help with Penny's surgery next month and the upcoming surgeries she will need as well as relieve some stress from Penny's Mommy and Daddy to care for her.
