some background: The Department of State Treasurer mistakenly overpaid millions of dollars of retirement money to recipients for decades. Now the state wants that money back. The error plummeted dozens of families into debt including Joseph and Penny Glenn. The state ordered them to pay back $241,000. They filed for bankruptcy and Joseph went back to work in his 80s delivering parts for an auto shop. Joseph spent his last years on earth laying off an impossible debt and died in June of 2022. When Penny went to pay for his funeral using a separate death benefit she was told the state garnished it for the debt. R.M.
