Penn Loves Santa Rosa Clinic

University of Pennsylvania alumni, friends and family:

Our dear friend, Dr. Patricia Whooley Kulawiak (C89) and her family lost their home of 20 years in the Santa Rosa fires. They were fortunate to escape with their children, dog and 2 cars but little less. 2 hours after they left, their home was burned to ashes. This is the typical scenario for those impacted—families got out just in time to save life, but not clothing, shoes, papers, etc. Many had to purchase essentials such as underwear and socks, the next day for themselves and their children.

Patricia lived on the 3rd floor in Hill House as a freshman and regaled us with her voice as part of the Quaker Notes a cappella group throughout our college years. Anyone who knows Patricia knows that she is ever heart-centered, focused on her mission to give comfort and assistance to the poor. This is what she does as a family doctor, day in and out, at Santa Rosa Community Health (SRCH), the largest community health agency in Santa Rosa. There, her patients are the immigrant laborers who pick our food and harvest our wine. In addition to agricultural laborers, patients include veterans and the homeless. Santa Rosa Community Health serves 50,000 patients regularly. Read more about the dedication of SRCH staff in serving their patients through the fires here .

Patricia’s concerns remain – not for her family’s losses or needs – but that of her patients, which represent the most vulnerable part of Santa Rosa’s population. With 6,600 structures lost, people who worked as gardeners, house keepers, handy-men or day laborers lost many of their regular customers. Plus, some families with homes intact have taken in others who lost their residences to the fires even though they can’t afford it. The children involved are impacted the most.

As friends and fellow Penn alumni, we want to support SHRC’s efforts by asking for contributions through this GoFundMe site so we can purchase Target gift cards in values of $50 and $100 for Patricia and her colleagues to distribute to those in need. These gift cards enable practical every day purchases for familes including groceries, underwear, baby’s formula, diapers, over the counter medicine, and clothing. Our initial goal is $1,500 (10 $100 gift cards and 10 $50 gift cards).

We encourage you to purchase 1 $100 and 1 $50 gift card if you are able. Otherwise, what ever you are able to do. Note, please include Go Fund Me’s 8% administrative fee to your donation amout:
$54 for a $50 gift card
$108 for a $100 gift card
$162 for one $50 and one $100 gift card.

Outside of these few additional dollars, your entire donation goes towards the purchase of the gift cards and DIRECTLY into the hands of those with need. PLEASE SHOW YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT TO THIS WORTHY CAUSE.

With love and gratitude: Monisha Mittal (W89), Lara Jakabowski (C89, WG96) and Erin Halm (C89).
