Imagine a world in which we create buildings that are not just environmentally friendly, but are build out of up-cycled material and are affordable. The project to build Penguins Learn and Play Center (PLPC) is all of that and more. An international collective of non-profit organisations, made up of CAP e.V (Germany), EcoBrick Exchange NPC (South Africa) & Indalo (South Africa) have combined forces in order to build this new Pre-school for the children of Walmer Township and their teacher Blommie Nontshinga.
Our goal is to receive 1000 $100 donation that will benefit 100 people at the Walmer township. The beneficiaries will be 50 school children and 50 community members receiving either training through EcoBrick or a job on side.
The goal of this global collaboration is to build 100 project till 2035 that will reach 1000 people with each project and change the perception and life of 1.000.000 through innovative up cycling projects around the world. Creating a community and bridge between the cultures.

Who are we?
A collective of international organisations from three continents, which pursue the construction of Penguins Play and Learn Center. These organisations bring a broad set of expertise to the table, from community engagement to international cooperation and sustainable up cycling.
Blommie Nontshinga is not only the Teacher at Penguins Play and Learn Center (PPLC), but also an important member of the Walmer Township community. She has graciously opened a pre-school that is connected to her home. As many people in the township she didn’t have the necessary financial support in order to get a structure built that is safe and can accommodate all the children from her neighborhood, which are in need of a clean and safe day care. Blommie's vision is to create a school that is safe and welcoming for everyone in need.
With your help and a global community already engaged, Penguins Preschool is going to be the first two story EcoBrick building in the world. But, this is more than just a building. We're creating a new movement that is developing a new model of community engagement, social development, entrepreneurship, environmentally friendly building techniques and an overall awareness of how to heal our environment
Our approach to enabling sustaining environmental protection is through skills development within the green economy. Through the process of the project's construction phase local community members will be trained in the unique skills associated with reclaimed construction and responsible waste management. Thus, the legacy of the project will be the trained artisans who will be able to illustrate their skill set and leverage the project's media attention to gain further income opportunities.
All the permits for this building have been granted and there are no further obstacles in regards to the architectural layout and building techniques.
The first phase of our building consists:
1. careful demolition of certain existing structures which are currently on the property in such a way that the majority of the material can be reused within the project of material can be sold off
2. laying the foundations for the new components for the ground floor
3. installing the used shipping containers
4. retrofitting the used shipping containers
5. adapting the existing house structure
The second phase consists of building the outstanding components of the building.
The third phase consists of the external work such as playground, garden area and perimeter wall/fence.

Why EcoBricks?
Every child deserves a safe and clean school. It’s that simple. Our mission is to provide that environment for 50 children per year in Walmer Township, using EcoBricks - an affordable and environmentally sound new product. Along with building a school for the children in Walmer Township, this project will empower the local community by providing an opportunity to learn how plastic waste can be transformed into building material. And will provide the tools needed to take what they’ve learned, and put it into action.
What are EcoBricks?
EcoBricks are an alternative building material made entirely of existing plastic waste, and require no technical equipment. Made simply by compressing soft plastics into 2liter bottles with a stick/wooden spoon, they enable community members to repurpose waste into a valuable resource.
How do EcoBricks work?
There are multiple ways of using EcoBricks. Besides functioning as a replacement for bricks, EcoBricks can be transformed into EcoBlocks, which nestle like interlink in a Lego-like manner bricks. EcoBlocks replace conventional building material and, once plastered they become indistinguishable from a conventional wall. And all this while actively removing plastic waste from the surrounding neighbourhood.
Who are we? Our united vision
CAP e.V., EBE & Indalo has set itself the goal of reacting directly to local needs in under resourced and rural areas of Southern Africa. Education and development projects are implemented with the direct participation of the local population and various interest groups. The aim is to support and improve structures in education, business, sport and health through a comprehensive and sustainable range of projects. The support of communities takes place within such a framework that the local population can take over the implemented projects and continue them independently, hence ensuring the sustainability of the programmes. This goal is also to be achieved through cooperation and networking with the government and other local NGOs.
EcoBrick Exchange NPC is an award-winning South African non-profit organization based in Cape Town. The organization empowers local communities to transform their waste into structures of value. EcoBricks, however, are only an entry point to engaging with the local communities. Through engagements with local businesses, schools and NGOs training programmes are carried out and workshops organized to train the local communities about sustainable and environmental friendly lifestyles, improving the health of the local residents. https://ecobrickexchange.org/views/home.php
The two organizations have been working together since 2013, both adding their areas of expertise to the running projects. Cooperation is not limited to the technical implementation of measures. Team members of both organizations are in regular exchange with each other. Additionally bi-annual site visits of CAP-staff in South Africa, are scheduled to begin with the commencement of the construction phase.
When are we planning on starting to build?
The architectural plans are finalized, we have received all necessary permits, the grounds are secured. In architectural terms we have successfully finished 2/3 of the project. The goal is to start build November 1st, but in order to achieve this we need your support.
