Pedro's Fight

SCROLL DOWN FOR TRANSLATED VERSION. THANK YOU!

Hello everyone! Our names are Leticia and Juan Martinez. We want to thank you for taking the time to read our story.

My husband and I have been married for 10 years. We are proud parents of an 8 year old boy, Pedro Martinez. Pedro is an excellent student with a huge heart. At his young age, he is such a kind, responsible and loving child! He is the engine of our lives.
A few days ago, Pedro started with stomach pain, headache, had no appetite and when I tried to feed him, he only ate a little because he felt that he had to vomit, bruises on his legs but still he said he was fine. He was afraid to go to the Hospital until I told him that we had to go to the Little Hospital (the Clinic). After getting checked, the Doctor sent us home with the diagnosis of Strep Throat (infection in the throat), when we were by the elevator to go down for the medicine, Pedro told me that he had pain in his legs. Frightened, I came back and told the nurse that I needed to see the Doctor again. The doctor ordered to do blood work. After that, we went to eat and on the way out, they called me from the clinic and they told me not to give him the Strep Throat medicine but to give him tylenol instead. Upon arriving home, I noticed that Pepe has zero energy and just wanted to sleep. We slept for a while and they called me from the clinic again to tell me that I needed to take him to Children's Hospital because they had found something in his blood. The doctor told me that she had spoken to the hospital to inform them that we were on the way. Scared, I took him to the Hospital on an emergency basis. When we arrived, they checked him and did more blood work. About an hour later, they came to inform My Husband and I that our Son has LEUKEMIA (Cancer in the Blood). When I heard that, I could not believe that My Child, that little one with such a noble heart and the best gift God gave us, has that horrible disease. At that moment, my world collapsed. I wanted to get the last drop of blood out of me and give it to My Child (unfortunately, it is impossible to do that). We were informed that he had to stay in the hospital. That night was the worst night of my life. He saw as they poked My Child, all the blood they took and how frightened he was. I did not know what to do to make him feel a little better. The next day, we were told that they had to put a port (implantable port) on the left side of his chest that is connected to the heart for his chemotherapy. That night (at 8PM) they gave him his first dose and My Baby woke up the next day as the Child that I am use to, saying that he was okay.
Doctors have already explained the type of LEUKEMIA Pedro has (Precursor B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia) and the treatment he will under go for the next 3 years and Pepe says that he will do everything to recover. We know it will be a very difficult time in our lives but I have Faith in God and The Virgin of Guadalupe that My Child will come out of it.

We wholeheartedly ask you to keep Our Child in your prayers.

Again, thank you very much and may God Bless you.
