Pediatric Cancer is a Bully

Marissa (my previous student) is now in 8th Grade and her teacher asked her to write about an experience where she was bullied. She titled her essay, "Cancer is a Bully."
Marissa has been battling Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare and incredibly aggressive recurring brain tumor for the last two years. Thus far, this tough cookie has been through three rounds of chemo, radiation, and two brain surgeries and every time I see her, she still has a smile on her face. Some might think the cancer is winning, as the tumor keeps growing back but --- you don't know this girl!
She is strong, wise, and mature for her age and she's a fighter with a lot of love in her heart and a strong will to live. She celebrates the smallest of things right now, and with a ton of love in her heart and dreams for a future that's cancer-free, she battles fiercely, with her Mom and first grade sister at her side. Rady Children's Hospital is overseeing her care, and her Mom has never left her side, even if it means sleeping in a chair for days end.
However, her Mom had to give up her job to care for Marissa, and she is the sole provider so that leaves their household, where they sleep all in one room together, with no means of support. Can you help me help them? The smallest of donations, $5, $10, whatever you can afford, will add up and take some stress off during this incredibly challenging time.
