On Wednesday 24th July 2019, Izzy and Ben will be leaving to cycle from London to Paris over 4 days on a tandem. They are raising money for 2 charities: Melanoma UK and Burning Nights CRPS Support.
We have chosen Melanoma UK as one of our charities in memory of Ben’s granddad John. John was a keen cyclist who was well known at Frome District Wheelers and took part in many races including 12 and 24 hour rides. He passed away on Ben’s 4th birthday, aged just 65 after battling with melanoma and then lymphoma. His long spell of a good fit life in spite of the cancer was attributed to his cycling regime, giving him such a strong constitution. Melanoma UK is a support based charity which offers help to those with melanoma and their families.
Burning Nights is our other charity. After a fall to on her coccyx last year, Izzy has had problems with her back and legs. After 16 months of speculation, she was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome in her left foot and chronic pain syndrome in her back and legs. The charity has been vital for Izzy to find support and people to connect with during a time when there was a lot of uncertainty. The people she connected with through the charity have been vital for her to find the right treatments and get support from people who understand. Izzy is also doing this ride to prove to herself that she is capable of so much more than she thinks, even though she is now disabled.
Our event will take place over 4 days which has been organised by a company called skyline events. We will leave from London on Wednesday morning and then cycle 95 miles to Calais on our first day. Day two (which will be Izzy's 18th birthday), we will cycle from Calais to Abbeville – a total of 75 miles. Day 3 will be a 70 mile ride from Abbeville to Beauvais and then finally a 60 mile ride from Beauvais to the Eiffel Tower on the final day. We will arrive in Paris on the Saturday and will then watch the Tour de France finish in Paris on the Sunday.
We are doing the ride on a tandem - not only to make it harder, but Izzy's condition can affect her legs and make them not work properly. By doing the tandem, it gives us a better chance of us reaching the finishing line together!
