World Cancer Day is a significant event that occurs on February 4th of every year to educate people about cancer prevention, detection and treatment. Naledi Initiative is anchored on the same philosophy of cancer awareness advocacy and early detection which lead to better outcomes in the treatment.
Naledi Initiative is a Non-profit Community Based-Organization registered in Kenya promoting community well-being to unprivileged population at grassroots level. Comprises 5 Board Members and 35 technical working groups of health and administrative professionals from different institutions both public and private. Who have generous hearts and relentless passion for volunteering their experience, skills, knowledge and resources to serve and close the gap of community empowerment, cancer awareness and screening, and preventive measures to vulnerable people in the underserved rural communities in Kenya.
Founded by a young man who lost his mother through cervical cancer in very challenging circumstances while he was in school. The situation forced him to drop out of school to nurse his disparate late mother and later step up as a parent to his 5 siblings while he was in school. The mission is to empower communities and advocate on cancer awareness and its importance for early detection through screening in marginalized rural communities to save lives and give hope to those affected.
Lack of finance is not the only challenge facing rural communities to fight cancer; the distance to access screening services are far and few; the myth and stigma associated with cancer; the scarcity of trained health providers with skills for cancer diagnosis; lack of diagnostic equipment and management of cancer is also a big challenge.
The Naledi Initiative has identified this need in rural communities and stepped into it to close this gap through partnership with government health centres. Our volunteer team of healthcare providers travel to and set up screening stations in primary schools in the villages, converting the primary school into a one-day “hospital”. We then do referrals of suspicious cases to public referral hospitals, pay the cost associated with biopsy examination and staging, and pay for them Social health Insurance for two years for any positive cases.
So far, we are able to offer two free cancer screenings per year due to limited resources. 10,567 people are beneficiaries of our 7 one-day free cancer screening medical camps in Meru County, Kilifi County in Rabai, Tharaka Nithi County, the border of Isiolo County, Laikipia County and Meru County and our desire is reach a more underserved population in Kenya.
According to Global Cancer Observatory 2020, Kenya reports 44,726 new cancer cases every year, 29,317 deaths every year and number of preference cases is 102,152. The top three leading cancers by death in Kenya are breast cancer, cervical and prostate.
Robert, founder of Initiative and other volunteers cyclists will be cycling to 6 counties (Meru, Lakipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu and Tharaka Nithi) covering more than 300 Kilometers in two days for cancer awareness and fundraising for free cancer screening to underserved population in the rural communities in Kenya. The tour will start on 3rd and 4th February 2025 as we commemorate world cancer day, and we will later have free cancer screening medical camp on February 8th 2025.
We will be cycling to honor our loved ones whose cancer has taken from us, to honor cancer survivors, spread the word about cancer risk, and raise money to save lives because early detection can save lives and give hope. It can be an emotional journey, not only for the person facing the diagnosis, but for their loved ones too.
Your dollar, pound can save a child not to be orphaned caused by monster cancer which can be treated if detected early.
Kindly help us to reach out to your family, friends and other well-wishers to support us and raise needed funds to create more awareness about cancer as we reach out to more villages screening for early detection.
