For the past three years we've steadily worked at making a difference in hunger in our community and it's time to expand and grow those efforts. The peace meal program exists to ensure that there's a hot meal every day of the week for anyone in need. All we ask in payment is for guests to pay it forward, to do something kind for someone else.
These meals help to provide a sense of stability and a place where trust can grow. Relationships are built and we're able to assess needs, make referrals to other organizations and much more.
This is an all volunteer effort. We have a network of the kindest people in southern Oregon. Together we take steps to create the kind of world we want to live in, one where we all take better care of each other.
We need your help.
Recently we found a building that we are turning into a community kitchen, a place where people can come together to create nutritious and healing food. A place where nurturing new dreams and goals will become a community hub and skill center. Right now this 910 square feet warehouse space holds refrigerators, freezers and tables. There are shelving units for supplies. What it doesn't have is sinks. Rather than trying to build the plumbing infrastructure, we can go portable. We need to invest in a three sink portable unit as well as a portable hand washing sink.
We are also seeking financial support from our community to demonstrate that we have your support. That the work we are doing is something you see value in. Several foundations have suggested we need to do a better job at showing this. We don't ask for support for SOJwJ very often, but you do see us raising money to help people directly(getting hotel rooms for elderly people in the winter, helping families with emergency car repairs, health needs and much more). We have to ask you to directly support our work, so that we can continue to do that.
Breakdown of most immediate costs:
Approx $3,000 for portable triple sink and hand washing sink.
Rent at $910 for 12 months = $10,920
Utilities cost still undetermined.
