Update on My Double Lung Transplant Journey

My name is Luis O. Ortiz, also known as Omy. I want to share an update on my double lung transplant process.

Over the past four months, I was hospitalized in several facilities, including Medical City Plano, Baylor Scott & White in Plano, and UT Southwestern in Dallas, where I was admitted twice. It was at UT Southwestern where I finally received my double lung transplant.

These have been intense months filled with exams, tests, and ongoing treatment. After receiving four transplant offers, by the grace of God, the surgery was finally successful.

This process has brought many medical and living expenses. I still have about one more month of hospitalization, followed by at least three months of outpatient treatment. I will need to take immunosuppressant medications for the rest of my life, and during the first year, I’ll also need to undergo a bronchoscopy every three months.

The medical expenses continue to be overwhelming, which is why we created this GoFundMe. Thanks to the incredible support we’ve already received, part of my hospital stay has been covered but we haven’t yet reached our goal and still need your help.

Actualización sobre el proceso del trasplante de pulmón bilateral

Mi nombre es Luis O. Ortiz, mejor conocido como Omy. Quiero compartirles una actualización sobre mi proceso de trasplante.

Durante los últimos 4 meses estuve hospitalizado en varias instituciones: Medical City Plano, Baylor Scott & White en Plano, y UT Southwestern en Dallas, donde estuve en dos ocasiones y finalmente se realizó mi trasplante de pulmón bilateral.

Fueron meses intensos, llenos de estudios, tratamientos y exámenes constantes. Luego de recibir cuatro ofertas de trasplante, gracias a Dios finalmente se logró llevar a cabo la operación.

Este proceso ha implicado muchos gastos, y mi recuperación aún continúa. Permaneceré aproximadamente un mes más hospitalizado y luego me esperan al menos tres meses adicionales de tratamiento ambulatorio. De por vida deberé tomar medicamentos inmunosupresores, y durante el primer año debo realizarme una broncoscopía cada tres meses para asegurar que todo esté en orden.

Los costos médicos siguen siendo altos, y por eso creamos esta cuenta de GoFundMe. Gracias a las personas que ya han contribuido, hemos podido cubrir parte de los gastos durante mi hospitalización, pero aún no hemos alcanzado la meta y seguimos necesitando su apoyo.
