What: Research, Exposure, and Typhoon Haiyan Relief work in the Philippines

The political and economic situation in the Philippines keep worsening as we constantly hear news of land grabbing, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, militarization, prioritization of foreign corporations, and government corruption. The poor gets poorer while the rich gets richer. The peasants and workers who have toiled everyday so that the entire world can eat and survive have been subjects of these human rights violations that continue to plague the Philippine society. This year, members of Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines (PCHRP) have made a conscious decision to go on an intense Research and Exposure Trip to the Philippines. PCHRP is composed of Filipino immigrant youth, students, women, LGBTQ, professionals, workers, and allies who work together in solidarity to advance the national democratic movement of the Philippines in the United States through education, leadership development, and political action. As a testament to our mission - serve the people - the purpose of this trip is to learn about the true conditions and struggles of the Filipino people. As students of the masses, we intend to learn about the history, concrete conditions, and human rights situation of the masses from the masses themselves.

TYPHOON RELIEF
This trip is accommodated through BAYAN Philippines (Bagong Alyansang Makabayan or New Patriotic Alliance), a multi-sectoral formation struggling for national and social liberation against imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucrat capitalism. BAYAN Philippines envisions a just society, free from foreign domination. With the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan, PCHRP now has gotten the directive to help with relief efforts in Visayas. The Relief/Exposure Trip to the Philippines will take us all over the islands of the Philippines for 2 and half weeks and will give us an opportunity to help with the Typhoon Haiyan relief work that is happening in most affected areas. In this journey for self-revelation, we hope to grow as a team and come back to our communities, ready to educate, organize, and mobilize with more passion and personal conviction.
