Dwon Fields, Jr. (DJ) was murdered, in a senseless act of violence, on Friday, March 5, 2021. DJ was NOT a party to or associated with the violence that killed him. He was a victim of it.
He was a senior defensive lineman on Bluffton High School’s football team. Two additional Bluffton High students were also injured during the shooting. One was treated at a local hospital and released. The other young man remains hospitalized, in critical condition.
DJ’s roots run deep in the Bluffton community. His family is very active in the schools, youth athletics, student mentoring and so much more. The Mikkelson and Vaux families have established The Dwon Fields, Jr. Memorial Fund, in his honor, to assist his parents with the celebration of his life, their expenses as they navigate through this tragedy and a memorial or scholarship (to be determined) that will keep DJ’s spirit alive for generations to come.
His mama, Kema, describes him best … “Do you want to know DJ Fields? He was his father’s only son and my only son. He was our world. On the night of March 5th our world was shattered. Our chain has been broken. But he was not only our son, DJ was a grandson, a cousin, a nephew, a friend and he was a brother! DJ never referred to any of the fellas as his friends. They were all his brothers! I would ask him where he was going or who are you going with and he'd say, ‘my brother’. Then I'd ask, ‘which one?’ Our son touched so many lives in his 18 years. He definitely left his mark not only in the hearts of his family but in the hearts of Bluffton and in the hearts of the Lowcountry. Rest on baby, we love you and you will be forever missed!”
