Keep Susan in her Home

Donation protected
Susan Spear is a disabled woman who was recently widowed and left without an income. She has epilepsy, a neurological disorder which has made it impossible for her to work, has lived life with the support of an ileostomy since the age of 18, and suffered a brain aneurysm about 15 years ago. She has severe memory loss as a result of her epilepsy, and is unable to manage even simple tasks like making doctor's appointments for herself. She and her husband were living off benefits received from the social security administration in her husband's name, and upon his death the benefits were revoked.

Susan's family has struggled since August, when her husband died, to reinstate Susan's own Social Security benefits or to help her obtain survivor's benefits, but as of yet they have not been successful. Social services is a difficult system to wade through, even with the help of a case worker and an advocate. There is hope that around her 60th birthday, which is coming up this year, her benefits will be approved and she will have the income she needs to continue living in her small apartment in West Sacramento.

Susan's children and sister have managed to pay for her rent with the support of various non-profits, and more recently with their own funds, but they've hit a wall with the resources available and are now in need of assistance to pay Susan's rent. If evicted from her home Susan would not have any other options for housing.

The money we are requesting will pay for 3 months of rent for Susan Spear, ensuring a disabled woman is able to stay in her home.
